Need domain to point to new servers
-
I purchased the domain meaganewton.com from WordPress and, after some time, moved its hosting to HostGator. I also removed it as the URL that shows in the URL address bar so that I could make the site I wanted to make. However, no matter what I did (and I tried many options, including manually removing all WP files from my site’s file manager), the domain still pointed to the WP blog, *even when another CMS was installed instead of WP*. I decided to delete the blog because I know for sure I do *not* want WordPress as a part of my URL or hosting or domain name in any way. Even though it’s been a few days, the domain still points to the WordPress blog, despite no longer having any WordPress files or code on the host server anymore.
What can I do about this? I’m not interested in restoring my blog. I already have copies of the posts I wanted to keep, and I don’t want to use WordPress.com anymore at all. I’ve moved over to self-hosting, but no matter what I do (including try to change the server information on my hosting site) I can’t change the URL to point to the new servers.
Since I bought the domain from WordPress.com, I think you may be the only ones who can help me. I don’t want my blog restored. But I’d like my domain to point to the proper place. Can you help me do that, please?
Thanks,
-Meagan Ewton
PS — the blog I deleted was not madebymeagan.wordpress.com. I deleted meaganewton.wordpress.com. I still don’t want it back; I just want my purchased domain (which does not contain wordpress in it) to be usable.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Still trying to get the domain I bought from WordPress to point to the servers it’s hosted on now. I can’t fix it; I’m hoping somebody at WordPress can.

You might have deleted your ability to access the Dashboard to change your name servers
I have flagged this for the staff to help
Where do you want the name servers to point?
-
Thank you. The name servers are:
ns8399.hostgator.com
ns8400.hostgator.comI have indeed deleted my ability to change it myself, though I didn’t realize I would lose that by deleting the blog associated with it. There were plenty of warnings about saving content, but nothing associated with losing the ability to manage domain information. My domain had already been moved to a new host; I had no idea I would need to access my old blog to take care of my domain that wasn’t even there anymore.

First, you need to renew your domain here:
https://madebymeagan.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=my-upgrades
Then, you can point the domain you registered at WordPress.com to another server (hosting service), with these steps:
You’ll need to obtain the name server values from your current host. You should be able to find them on their support documentation, or contact them and ask for the information. (Name servers may be referred as “nameservers” or “NS records” instead.)
You will always be able to administer your site here:
https://madebymeagan.wordpress.com/wp-admin/index.php

Hi Paul,
My domain meaganewton.com is already active; it doesn’t expire until September. I’m not sure how I’m supposed to renew an active domain. There’s a second domain that I *don’t* want to renew associated with the above blog (madebymeagan.com); is that the one you referred to in your first step?
Regarding the second step, changing the name servers from the My Domains section only works if you I access the My Domains section related to that URL. For meaganewton.com, I cannot. It doesn’t show up in the My Domains section, and when I click Domain Settings for the URL from the Upgrades menu, it just takes me to my deleted blog.
Regarding the third step (that I can do), they are listed in an above comment.
I don’t want to be rude, but I don’t think you’ve answered my question or helped me move forward. Each step you listed above is what I worked and did before I ever posted. When it didn’t work, I knew I couldn’t do it myself. That’s why I posted at all. I simply cannot access my own domain settings.

is that the one you referred to in your first step?
Correct. If you no longer want madebymeagan.com, I can cancel it for you.
Before I proceed, there are a few points I need to cover.
If we cancel your domain, it can take up to several weeks for our domain registrar to release the domain, and we can’t guarantee that your domain will be available to you again, once canceled.
If you want to keep using your domain, but you don’t want to use WordPress.com anymore, you don’t have to cancel it. Instead, you can move the domain to another site, using the Domain Administration tool under Store > Domains, at the bottom of the page.
For more information on using the domain elsewhere, please see:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-management/
I’ve re-associated meaganewton.com with your only existing WordPress.com site, madebymeagan.wordpress.com, as well:
https://madebymeagan.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains
If you want me to proceed with canceling madebymeagan.com, please confirm.

Hi Paul,
Yes, please cancel madebymeagan.com.
Thank you for adding meaganewton.com to the domain management for my blog. I’ve changed the A and CNAME records to point to the correct server (108.167.181.35 from what I can tell), and I can now pull up my site when I type in my URL.
I would like to know if I will need to always keep my madebymeagan.wordpress.com blog active in order to access my meaganewton.com domain. If so, I will; it’s just not intuitive to me that this would be the case since the URL is already hosted with another company.
Thank you for your help. I’m happy that I can access my site again. I’ve already installed WordPress as the CMS and I’ll upload my purchased themes later this week. Thank you again.

I’ve canceled madebymeagan.com, as requested.
Your domain meaganewton.com, is registered with LAUNCHPAD.COM, INC., not WordPress.com.
If you have no intention of using the domain with madebymeagan.wordpress.com, I can remove the Domain Mapping Upgrade for you, as it is unnecessary.
Then, at the domain’s registrar, LAUNCHPAD.COM, INC., you can update the domain’s name servers and point it towards your new hosting provider.
If you have additional questions, please let us know.
