Need 'dotcom' removed from my blog url.

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I have just purchased the domain ‘glutenfreeinlondon.com’. It is not showing up as ‘glutenfreeinlondondotcom.wordpress.com.

This is not what I purchased.

Please could the WordPress mods explain why this has happened and inform how I can remove this unwanted appendage to my URL. I have searched for previous answers but can find none. I am quite annoyed as I spent a long time considering this name!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

URLs cannot be edited. Moreover, it does not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com blog URL is when you are domain mapping.

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from. If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.

If you do not own a domain name then see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

If you already own a domain name see here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

P.S. This thread is tagged for a Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

Thanks for your quick response @timethief. I have looked into it further, tried changing my primary domain to my desired URL, (www.glutenfreeinlondon.com) but now am getting this message on Google Chrome when trying to load my site:

This webpage has a redirect loop

    Reload Less
The webpage at http://glutenfreeinlondon.com/ has resulted in too many redirects. Clearing your cookies for this site or allowing third-party cookies may fix the problem. If not, it is possibly a server configuration issue and not a problem with your computer.

    Error code: ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS

Would really appreciate some guidance from the staff!

    Hi again
Please do not panic as this not a unique issue. Others have made the same error and Staff have fixed it for them. Staff work their way through support tickets and forum threads tagged for their attention by dealing with those that have the earliest date and timestamps first so please be patient while waiting for Staff to assist the bloggers who posted before you did.

    FYI It’s working fine now.

  • Unknown's avatar

Hooray! It’s working for me now too. Tagging for Staff removed.

  • Unknown's avatar

http://glutenfreeinlondon.com/ – loads fine for me – however it is mapped to glutenfreeinlondondotcom.wordpress.com. and not http://glutenfreeinlondon.wordpress.com/ which seems to be your regular blog

@TT has already Flagged this for the staff to help help move the domain mapping

The redirects are because you are still inside the 24 to 72 hour time for changes to reach the far corners of the internet – the redirects are normal and will go away once the changes have migrated

If you want you can move the Domain mapping yourself – Dashboard >> My Upgrades >> Cursor over the domain mapping and pick the transfer option and follow the instructions, being very very careful with spelling, or you can wait for the staff to help

Getting the “dotcom” happens from time to time, I don’t know if there is a bug in the registration / mapping feature or if some of the instructions are a bit fuzzy – but the staff have a 100% record of fixing this –

Set the extra blog you received to “Private” and use it for pratice and such – don’t delete it – never can tell when a spare blog will come in handy or you need to store some media on the web sometime

    Primary Blog is Set

glutenfreeinlondon.com is set as the primary domain for glutenfreeinlondondotcom.wordpress.com and will appear in the address bar when you visit the site.

Ah @auxclass , thanks for your helpful comment. I can’t seem to find how to change the domain mapping myself, so will await staff help…

  • Unknown's avatar

You be welcome, the staff can straighten out the mapping for you – patience is a virtue at this point

  • Howdy,

It appears you also have two accounts. To confirm, you would like to map glutenfreeinlondon.com to glutenfreeinlondon.wordpress.com ?

If so, could you kindly add your user account as an administrator to glutenfreeinlondon.wordpress.com via this page: https://glutenfreeinlondon.wordpress.com/wp-admin/users.php?page=wpcom-invite-users

Since your two sites (glutenfreeinlondon and glutenfreeinlondondotcom) are associated with different accounts, we’d need to confirm your relation to both.

    Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

No, I don’t want to map those accounts. There is some confusion here. glutenfreeinlondon.wordpress.com is not my account. This belongs to the user ‘Gluten-free travels’. Therefore access is denied to me at the above link.

I registered for and purchased the domain http://www.glutenfreeinlondon.com. The URL was showing up as http://www.glutenfreeinlondondotcom.wordpress.com, which I changed by setting http://www.glutenfreeinlondon.com as my primary address.

In my Dashboard however, it still says:

‘Although your site address is glutenfreeinlondon.com, keep in mind that your dashboard address is glutenfreeinlondondotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/’

I just want my address/URL to only be ‘www.glutenfreeinlondon.com’.

Please let me know what is the best way to proceed, thanks for your response.

  • Unknown's avatar

    your dashboard address is glutenfreeinlondondotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/’

That is the address that you will always use to work on your blog in the Dashboard

You will never work in the Dashboard of glutenfreeinlondon.com’. – ever as long as you are on WordPress.COM – your visitors will however always see glutenfreeinlondon.com’. if you have set up your primary domain name correctly – note also no “www” in any address here

If you can’t deal with that then you will need to get your own host and set up a WordPress.ORG install –
