    HI,

Im trying to find out the following FTP information so I can use the migration tool offered by GoDaddys hosted WP site that I am trying to create.

    I need…
    Host Location or IP address
    FTP Username
    FTP Password

I hope this is possible. I am not closing this account, just want my past posts to show up in the new website and they are related.

    Thanks in advance!

They told me that it supports WordPress.

  • Hi there. We don’t have FTP access to our sites, so there’s no way for you to get that information. http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/

To migrate to a self-hosted blog, you’ll first need to buy your domain and hosting plan from GoDaddy and install the WordPress.org software and the WordPress.org theme of your choice to that domain. Then you export your posts from WordPress.com and import them to your new site. Instructions here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org

You can also have staff move your blog for you if you buy the Guided Transfer upgrade: http://support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/

For help on the WordPress.org side of things, you’ll need to post in their forum. More info here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    Thanks Kokkieh.

Essentially I was under the impression from GoDaddy that by using their migration tool through their Managed WP web hosting, I would have a smooth transition – posts, stats, everything. But this whole FTP thing makes it impossible. SO yes, I’ll have to use the export/import function.

This will serve as a Public Service Announcement to ALL who’s considering getting the Managed WP web hosting with GoDaddy. Do NOT think their highly totted migration tool will work. Looking at this, they’ll blame it on WP for not providing the FTP info – even though I’m pretty sure they know the situation – offering false hope.

Hopefully my new website will be smooth sailing from here on.
    Thanks for everyone’s attention!
    Cheers
    Karen

  • To be fair, GoDaddy’s migration tool does work, but only if you’re migrating from another WordPress.org site, not from WordPress.com. On the other hand, I’ve seen other people mention that GoDaddy has a bit of a reputation for poor customer service, so if you haven’t put any money down yet it might be worthwhile looking at other hosting services as well.

You can migrate your followers to the self-hosted site using the Jetpack plugin. That plugin also gives you access to your WordPress.com stats, though I’m not sure if it transfers your existing stats to the new site. Instructions for moving your followers and a link to the Jetpack page here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/

Well I wasn’t trying to say the migration tool doesn’t work at all. I just didn’t make it crystal clear that, as in my instance – it doesn’t work when migrating from WP.com to WP.org with GoDaddy. (but if the person read my original post, they should realize that).

Anyways. yes. Jetpack is already on my list of plugins to install. Cheers.

Hey Kokkieh so I’m very new to this Im working under wordpress.com and have a domain with Go daddy. However i needed to have a host because my HTML codes don’t work on wordpress.com I signed up with go daddy and WordPress can’t give and explanation to what is my next step? Please help!!!

What html codes are you trying to use? We’re not allowed to use Flash or JavaScript, but most of the other stuff work here. Tell us exactly what you want to do, and maybe there’s a way you can do it without html.

As I explained earlier in this thread, besides your domain you’ll need to set up a hosting account, and then download and install the WordPress.org software to that domain, along with a WordPress.org theme. The WordPress.org support site lists several hosting providers that specifically supports the WordPress.org software.

I see your current theme is Magazine by Studiopress. You can contact Studiopress to find out about a WordPress.org version of that theme if you also want to use in on your self-hosted site: http://www.studiopress.com/

Once you’ve set up your self-hosted site, you can transfer your content over there with the export/import functions under Tools in the WP-Admin dashboard. You can transfer your followers, and gain access to a number of WordPress.com features via the Jetpack plugin.

You’ll probably need other plugins besides Jetpack to get certain features available in WordPress.com, but with the right plugins you can get all the functionality you have on WordPress.com, and then some. You’ll need to visit the WordPress.org support forums for help with that, as well as any other issues regarding self-hosted sites.

Note that you can also buy the Guided Transfer upgrade. With that once-off upgrade a staff member will help you with this entire process if you don’t feel up to doing it all yourself. http://support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/
