I need help building a website. I’m overwhelmed at the array of themes and plugins. The few themes i did find seem to almost provide what I’m looking for but i need specific functions built into my site. How do I begin. Can anyone help me build my vision?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi

Starting is always difficult and figuring out what you need vs want is just as tough.

If what you really need is full customization (Theme or Plugins) then you may have to consider using the self hosted version of WordPress, along with a Web Developer.

You an see the differences between .Com and .Org here:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

We cannot help you build specific functions into your site if you don’t specify the functions.

Check out “GALE COURSES” They are a very good way to get started, and they are done on-line. I had my wordpress.com for two years, and am just starting to learn how to use it now. All the best.

Also, the courses are usually offered through your public library – depending on where you are located. Check it out – you will be pleased, and will learn how to use WordPress – at least more than “trying it on your own.”

Can you post a link to a website that you would like to use as a model?

  • Unknown's avatar

The WordPress community is very helpful indeed. Thank you “rvreal”, “marjaj55″,”auxclass”,”raincoaster” and “heyadamsilver” for your responses so far.

I’m on a budget so any help is greatly appreciated.

The theme I’m looking to modify is:
    http://colorlabsproject.com/themes/classifier/

Is it possible to use Adobe Muse with wordpress and the theme above?

From my understanding so far, a theme needs to contain the child files to be able to edit. Is this correct?

Where would one look towards when sourcing a reliable and excellent website developer to help modify a theme? Is is expensive?

Is it possible to learn coding like css/php without much knowledge in this field?

  • Unknown's avatar

    WAIT.

You will not be able to do this at all on a WordPress.com blog. You cannot external themes, for security reasons.

You could do it on a WordPress.org blog hosted elsewhere. Modifying a theme involves hiring a designer at $75 an hour and up, so depending on what you want changed, it can be expensive.

It is certainly possible to learn CSS coding from scratch. But it’s not necessary with a WP.com blog; it is designed to be a turnkey solution and you can modify the appearance using the Custom Design upgrade.

So, basically you need to decide if you want a turnkey website or a custom deal that costs more and where you will be responsible for security and upgrades.

Yes raincoaster, I will definitely be choosing a .org wp with my own hosting, namely bluehost. Predicted traffic and features implemented will need a dedicated IP/VPN.

The website I plan on having is going to need plenty of customization. I just have so many ideas that I can envision and already see on this future website of mine, I just wish there was a magic paintbrush to capture one’s ideas and translate them into ready made coding. (For those of us who have no coding experience)

75$ p/h is a price i cannot afford so will have to start saving.

Is the above mentioned theme customizable once uploaded into wp.org? I need buttons built to execute certain actions.

Are there any portals you know of where developers would assist in return for equity in a new startup?

  • Unknown's avatar

None. Designers in particular are inundated with requests to work for equity.

I strongly suggest you just start here with a customizable theme and the $99 upgrade bundle. THEN you can look at moving off WP.com once you’re fluent with the actual running of the site.

If you don’t narrow down your vision, you will be letting yourself in for an unending series of invoices from designers. Start here, practice, get a strong handle on exactly what you need and then transfer your blog to Bluehost or wherever.

Buttons are easy to make, either here or at a WP.org blog. Again I say we cannot give you specific instructions to make what you want unless you give us specifics.

If you are absolutely set on a Bluehost blog, then you should go ask your questions at the appropriate forum for the version of the software you will be using: WordPress.org. We will not be able to help you further.

  • Unknown's avatar

raincoaster, I will most definitely follow your advice and start on wp.com

Buttons that are customizable. Sounds good. You are right, I may just be able to achieve everything I am looking for here.

A question i have regarding using wp.com. I’ve designed a previous website on Wix.com and although it was very user friendly, there are functions which aren’t available to one looking for more advanced features.

My question is, does wp.com offer increased options for creativity and creating unique buttons than Wix?

If this is true, then I will definitely be using the wp.com to begin with

does wp.com offer increased options for creativity and creating unique buttons than Wix?

I have absolutely no idea. I tried Wix for about twenty minutes and backed away.

What SPECIFICALLY do you need from these buttons? What do you need them to look like, where do you need to put them, what do you need them to do?

  • Unknown's avatar

    yip Wix isn’t an option.

Well my site will allow users to upload images on their registered profile. Essentially they would upload images into a category such as electronics, baby goods etc.

Each category would be a circle icon button. When a user browses each category and see’s other user’s items they would be able to connect via a “like” button. Similar to tinder where users can browse items and simply click “yes” or “no” to convey interest.

Algorithms would need to understand what a user is searching for to recommend similar items of interest.

A star system ensures users built up credibility and their online reputation. The site needs to allow users to upload images and then the back-end tools auto populate these into various categories.

An example of a site is www dot swapz dot co dot uk

Is this possible to build on wordpress.com or should I look at worpress.org?

  • Unknown's avatar

my site will allow users to upload images on their registered profile.

You are without question looking at development costs of at least ten thousand dollars, plus hosting, plus security policing, because that’s going to be a spam magnet.

And the only way to do this on WordPress.com is to use the $30,000 a year VIP program.

  • Unknown's avatar

raincoaster, correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think that much and I’ll explain why.

Using the wp.org I could hire a developer on elance/freelancer to modify the classifier theme
    http://colorlabsproject.com/themes/classifier/ for under $1000.

    Bluehost have quoted me:

The Pro Package (ecommerce plan, larger standard plan) is only $19.95 per month, which is prepaid at $239.40 per year
    The Pro Package includes:
1 Dedicated IP ($39.99 per year value)
1 PositiveSSL Certificate ($49 per year value)
1 Domain Name Registration ($10 per year value)
1 Domain Privacy Protection ($9.99 per year value)
1 Premium backup Service ($19.99 per year value)

    with

In addition to increased CPU, IO and memory usage, we are also increasing limits for Pro customers. With fewer customers per server we’ve gained the ability to provide more resources. Most notably:
2000 Max Emails/Hour (up from 750 in the standard)
5 GB Total MySQL Databases (up from 3 GB)
5 GB Single Database Size (up from 2 GB)
3000 Database Tables (up from 1000)
    30 Mb/s Bandwidth (up from 15 Mb/s)
    300,000 files (up from 200,000)

So perhaps the bluehost package, a freelance developer hired at a fixed sunk cost less then $1000 means I may achieve this with monthly hosting fee’s being $19.95

The Classifier theme is less than $100 so all in all startup costs predicted at less than $1000
