  Hi, I am trying to cancel my domain with WordPress so that it is available elsewhere. How can I do that? Thank you.

  To use your domain elsewhere, you can change name servers or transfer it. If you let me know how you plan to use the domain, I can be more specific.

  I want to cancel my domain with WordPress. How do I do that? Do I just cancel and clear the entire website? Or since I paid and it expires in March 2016, does that mean I have to wait until March 2016? I want to disable it completely and have a different site host it completely as opposed to transferring it. Thank you.

  Thank you for the additional information. You can change your domain to use other host right now. To do that, get the name server information from the other host (except GoDaddy) and update it for your domain in your WordPress.com account: https://en.support.wordpress.com/change-name-servers/

  If you’ll be using GoDaddy for hosting, then follow this guide instead of the one above: https://en.support.wordpress.com/change-name-servers/point-a-wordpress-com-domain-to-godaddy/

  Once that’s done, denicelachapelle.com will show the content on the new hosting. Note that the changes may take up to 72 hours to take effect. During that time you may see the content switch back and forth between old and new.

  As to the WordPress.com domain, denicelachapelle.wordpress.com, you can choose to do one of the following: 1) make it private, 2) remove the content, or 3) delete the site.

  1. To make the site private so it’s no longer visible to anyone, go to Settings > Reading and tick the box next to “I would like my site to be private, visible only to myself and users I choose”. Then click “Save Changes” at the bottom. More info: https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

  2. To remove all of the content, follow the steps in this guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/empty-site/

  3. To delete the site, go to Tools > Delete Site. Note that this action is permanent. You won’t be able to use denicelachapelle.wordpress.com again. More info: https://en.support.wordpress.com/delete-site/

  If you cancel and return a domain, there is no guarantee it will become available somewhere else quickly, so you risk losing it. When a domain is canceled, it can take a few days before it is returned to the public pool of available domains. How long it takes may vary. Once it becomes available again, anyone can register it so if someone else registers it before you, then you won’t have a way to get it back.

  The safer and better way to keep control of a domain what you already own would be to transfer it to a different registrar. Transferring takes several steps, but if you just follow the instructions carefully then you should be okay. Here are the instructions:

  If you update name servers first (one of the things micawbr recommended), then you can start using the domain at a new host even before you do the transfer.
