Need help freeing a reserved WordPress.com subdomain (old account inaccessible)
-
Hello,
I hope someone can help me with this issue.
I’m trying to create a free WordPress.com site using the subdomain ibnthabitverlag.wordpress.com, but I’m being told that the address is reserved. The site does not exist, but the subdomain cannot be registered.
I highly assume this subdomain is attached to an old WordPress.com account I created years ago using Google login with the email (email visible only to moderators and staff).
This email address was deleted permanently, so I no longer have access to that old account and I cannot reset the password or recover it using the standard recovery form.
Important information:
- I am the owner of the domain ibnthabitverlag.de (I can verify ownership through DNS or any method needed).
- I want to use ibnthabitverlag.wordpress.com on my new account.
- I do not need anything from the old account, I only need the subdomain to be freed or the old account to be deleted.
- I am not on a paid plan, so I cannot access direct support unfortunately, so I have to post here.
Could someone please help me either:
- delete the old account connected to the deleted email, or
- free the reserved subdomain so that I can register it on my current WordPress.com account?
Thank you very much in advance!

Hello there,
We would not be able to delete the old account or website, but if you intend to use the domain ibnthabitverlag.de for your new site, the free .wordpress.com account would not really matter as it would not be used as the primary domain of the site.
If you still want to try and recover your old account we might be able to do that. Please contact us via email at help@wordpress.com and share as many details as you know from your previous account, such as:
- username
- transaction ID for things you purchased
- if you had any drafts, titles of the drafts

Thank you for your reply! Let me clarify my situation, because I think there was a misunderstanding:
I do not want to use my paid domain (ibnthabitverlag.de) on WordPress.com at this time. What I want is only the free WordPress.com subdomain:
ibnthabitverlag.wordpress.com
This subdomain is currently reserved by an old WordPress.com account that I created years ago through Google Login using the email (email visible only to moderators and staff) (which no longer exists).
I never created a site, and I never used the account — the subdomain was automatically reserved when the account was created.
Since I cannot access that old account anymore, I need one of the following:
- Either free the subdomain ibnthabitverlag.wordpress.comso I can use it with my current account
OR
- Help me recover the old account so I can delete the empty site myself.
I can verify ownership of ibnthabitverlag.de via DNS/TXT record if needed.
The important part is: 1) I want to secure the free WordPress.com subdomain and 2) I do NOT want to connect my paid domain right now
Please advise what steps I should take to recover the old account or release the reserved subdomain.
Thank you so much!
