Need help getting posts to appear on homepage and in a category
-
I want my blog set out so it has categories so when I post it not only appears on my home page but it appears in that category. Then I want to have a list of the categories on my home page so that for example if people want to look at all my posts about anxiety they click anxiety and everything I’ve written is there. I can’t figure out right now how to make something appear on my home page and in a category.
I’m completely new to blogging I’ve tried looking at different post on this but I just don’t understand them I need someone to break it down and explain it in simple terms please!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, let me try and help you out.
I want my blog set out so it has categories so when I post it not only appears on my home page but it appears in that category.
Provided that the blog post isn’t private, this should already happen. Let’s use your one of your latest posts, https://positivityonmind.wordpress.com/2018/07/17/how-the-stigma-exacerbates-mental-health-illnesses-still/, as an example.
It already appears on the homepage, but it also appears in the category: https://positivityonmind.wordpress.com/category/mental-health/
Then I want to have a list of the categories on my home page so that for example if people want to look at all my posts about anxiety they click anxiety and everything I’ve written is there.
This is definitely doable! You have two main options for making things appear on your homepage, but my assumption is that you would like it at the top menu, where “Journalling”, “Self Care” and others are.
You can set up a Category Page to do this. Please follow this guide and let me know if you run into any issues: https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/
Alternatively, if you’d like the categories to appear on the sidebar, you can use this widget: https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/categories-widget/
Let us know if you have any further questions or issues, we’d be happy to help! :)

Apologies, I used bold over the blockquote feature by mistake. The bold text was quoting you!

Hi!
Thanks for your help & quick reply, I’d like them as a side bar so I added the categories widget from the link you sent. But all that appears is ‘Mental Health’ – where has this come from? How do I delete that? How can I add categories to this?
Then, once I’ve got all the categories how do I add posts into them?
Thanks!

Hi there,
Ah, it seems “Mental Health” is a category which you’ve already created. Not to worry though!
How do I delete that?
Head over to: http://positivityonmind.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category
You can then click the red “Delete” button to delete a category. Don’t worry, these won’t delete the actual posts.
How can I add categories to this?
On the same link, on the left hand side, there’s an option to create categories. You can learn more by following this link: https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/2/
Then, once I’ve got all the categories how do I add posts into them?
Once you’ve created the categories you’ve wanted, you can then assign them to a post by following this guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/#adding-categories-via-the-categories-tags-module
Alternatively, head to this page: http://positivityonmind.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php
Click “Quick Edit” on the post of the category which you want to update. Then, click the boxes of the categories you want assigned to that post, before clicking “Update”.
Let me know if you have any further questions, I’d be happy to help! :D

I have added various categories and enabled the widget on my page but only the original ‘mental health’ one appears, the others dont appear?
-
I’m currently only seeing “Excercise” and “Mental Health” on the sidebar. If you’ve created other categories, have you assigned at least one post to them?
-
I didn’t realise the categories don’t appear until you assign a post to them – perfect thanks!
