Need help importing from my old blog. One post keeps failing.
-
One of my posts (from my previous WordPress blog) did not import and the import feature appears to be stuck. I had some communication on this previously with support and was asked to attach a copy of the file, which I did, but I have not heard back from anyone since, even after I sent a follow up message. Please help!

If the previous post is from a website in the same account, had no comments, and not too many images to worry about reattaching, then you may just copy and paste it into the receiving website. If there are any images in the missing post, were those images imported to the media library of the receiving website?

Sorry to hear about that. Was that in a different account, because this is your first topic under the kittywf520 account?

Thanks for your response. Yes, it was under a different account. It also was quite a long and complicated post with several photos and videos, and it had a number of comments. The main thing is, I’d like to keep the original date because it was from about a year ago.

You can always edit the date prior to publishing by clicking the little calendar icon on the right hand side of the Write Post page.

Thanks–I didn’t know that. The simplest solution then may be to just try to copy and paste the old post. Thanks very much.

@ kittywf520,
Here’s another alternative:
Do another export from the originating website, but limit the export to the one post which failed to be imported on the first try. You may limit the posts to be exported by the following variables:
a. categories
b. authors
c. date range
d. status: all, published, draft, scheduled, pending, private, spamThere are numerous obvious ways to use one of more of these elements to limit the import to one post or very few posts. For example:
a. Add a category to the post which is unique to the missing post.
d. Change the status to draft, pending, or private before export, but first be certain that it’s the only post on the exporting website with that status.
c. Let the beginning date and the ending date of the assigned range be the same. This option is only problematic if you published more than one post on the same date as the missing post. Then, import that file containing the one post.

Thanks for your detailed reply. I did try to import just the single post earlier. Unfortunately, it failed and got “stuck” so now I can’t try to import anything else (because it says “import in progress” and has for several days) until someone from WordPress clears it for me. They did once before, but lately they haven’t responded. Anyway, I did the cut and paste option and backdated it and that worked pretty well. I lost all the associated comments, but at least the basic post is in there now. Thanks again for all you help!

You’re welcome.

If you wish to have WP staff unstick the importer so that you may use it again, then you may add a “modlook” tag to the topic. Without that, there is a good chance that a Staff member might not respond. Most of the topics in the general support forum are fielded and solved by volunteers.

Thanks very much. This is really helpful. As you can probably tell, I’m pretty much a newbie at this. I added the tag; we’ll see what happens. Thanks again!

Hey Kitty,
I’ve canceled that ‘stuck’ job for you. You should be able to run your import again.
If you only have one post that’s causing the trouble…I’d suggest copying and pasting, if it makes things more simple. You can even adjust the publish date so it displays the original date, and appears in the correct chronological order on your site.
I hope this helps! If you have any other concerns, drop me a note. Thanks much!

Thanks for this. I wound up cutting and pasting the one post that kept getting stuck. I lost the comments associated with it, but it was definitely the easiest “fix.” Thanks.

Kitty,
Thanks for letting me know. I’m glad the path-of-least-resistance worked out for you. However, if any issues with the importer arise in the future, please do let me know. I want to help!
Wishing you all the best :)
