I just upgraded to be able to use the css edit function.
i feel like there’s a step that’s not clear to me.
i clicked on the option to see the original css file for my blog
    but then what?
i tried to edit it but that doesn’t work.
am i suppose to copy that make edits then import the editted version somehow.
i’ve been working so hard to learn this.
and thought i could figure it out once i upgraded but now neither of my blogs
    is working correctly.
there must be one big step i’m missing
    please help

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Juan, don’t know how to reply directly to you to say thanks for your advice.

truth is, i was trying to actually edit the css directly as you suggested
but i was not permitted me to make any changes.
that’s really was what was at issue.
i don’t know why. i thought i was doing it correctly
i received a confirmation of payment for the the css edit upgrade.
so i thought it should work. but was wondering if there’s some step i’m missing
thanks for any and all help

On the CSs edit page, is there a “save stylesheet” button at the bottom of the CSS window?

Are you using the preview function? If so, at times you might have to actually force refresh the preview page. Sometimes browsers will pull up a cached page instead of getting the new files and markup.

    Above my pay-grade

However you “Add To” and don’t edit the CSS directly – the software scans the base CSS file then scans your CSS file and makes the changes you made in the “Add To” section.

    here’s the steps i’m taking
    •pull up my blog
    •go to dashboard
    •under appearance click “edit css”
    • in stylesheet editor-click radio button that says”add this to the themes’s stylesheet
•click underlined type “view original stylesheet”

i am then looking at all the css and other code.
but when i highlight something to change it like say a color for example,
i can highlight the color code but i am unable to change it.

one of my blogs has a preview button
the other has a preview and a save stylesheet button.

am i suppose to delete the text in the top box then the code will go in there?

sorry i’m so confused but i so want to get designing

Try the Cookie Dance. Log out, clear browser cache and cookies, restart computer. It sounds like that may be the problem. Often when you can’t “grab” text to change it, that’s what’s happening.

You cannot edit the existing CSS at wordpress.COM. What you will have to do is pull out the specific selectors, and the specific declarations you need to change, and then put those into the CSS edit window and then edit those. When you save, your changes in the CSS edit window will override the like selectors and declarations in the existing CSS.

    i’ll try that out today.
    i’ve also emptied the cookies.

when i pull out specific selectors and declarations
how does css edit know which line or area to affect?

In the divs in the markup (XHTML) it tells the browser what part of the CSS to apply.

Hi, I am hoping you guys can help me. I also have a question about CSS editing. I am a total greenhorn, and didn’t know I couldn’t copy and paste the original CSS and then edit just the things I wanted changed. (Only colors of elements such as text, nothing else!) Now, everything looks great, except that my background image is gone. I know I messed it up somehow, but I don’t know how to fix it!!! Can you help?? Thanks so much!!!

You need to upload your background image to your media library, get the URL of that image and then put it into the background declaration of the body selector in your CSS

    body {
    background: url("URL of background image") repeat scroll 0 0 transparent;
    }

    Hi, I’m lost.
I understand that I need to copy the element I want changed to the CSS Stylesheet but how do I know what is what. for example I use DePo Mastead adn the first two things I want to change if the color of the text header from black to red , I can’t find anything on the sheet that I identify with the text header. And second the text header automatically justified the text … I want certain text on one line then certain text on a second line of the header.
If you can help me out with this that would be a great start..
    Thanks!

i wish i knew the answer to what you’re asking as well.

as soon as i locate something that looks like it might be what i want to change
i try it and see absolutely no change.
i accidentally stumbled upon 2 things i successfully changed.
although ask me to do it again….? i thought i would be able to add some sort of indication of where or what i’ve changed or checked but see nothing.

tiffaney sent me this info. might help

There are some handy tools out there that help you examine a web page to see where the css styling is coming from. I recommend downloading Firefox:

    http://getfirefox.com

And then getting Firebug, which is an add-on for Firefox that lets you examine the code content of a web page. Both are completely free and open source.

    http://getfirebug.com

Once you’ve got Firebug installed, load up your WordPress.com blog. Right click on something you want to change and then click on “Inspect Element.” A box will pop up at the bottom identifying which part of the CSS sheet is affecting that part of the page. There’s a little bit of a learning curve but once you get the hang of it you’ll be off and running.

And, don’t forget our page that points you toward CSS help:

We always recommend that you try the free CSS preview editing feature before buying the upgrade. So many people are unable to make the changes they want; there’s no reason you should have to pay first and find out later. Try the preview.
