Need help re-connecting my domain
-
My blog has run on wordpress.com for several years, but a few weeks back I started getting error pages. So I login to wordpress.com and see the blog, but no domains and I get errors for the WP-Admin pages. It says I need a paid account to add a domain, but the ‘plans’ page only lists Jetpack upgrades. Eventually I find and purchase the $48 personal wordpress.com annual plan, but that created a new/blank site using my old domain.
On the old site, when I look at pages like ‘Manage Connection’ I get a ‘Something Went Wrong’ error so i can’t even figure out what the *.wordpress.com url is.
Seems like I need help from actual wordpress support. I assumed my $48 purchase would include support, but apparently all I can do is post to a forum.
WP.com: Yes
Jetpack: Yes
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

Hey there,
It sounds like your primary site is experiencing errors, most likely a Jetpack connection issue. Essentially the site thinks that it is not a WordPress.com site even though it is. We can certainly look into the issue and help reconnect everything, but I do not see that site associated with the account you used to comment on here. I only see the new site with the domain connection for joshwright.com.
In this case, we will need to verify the ownership account of the main site so that we can dig in and see what the issue is with your original site. You can verify the account by commenting on this thread from that account or reaching out to us through our other support channels listed here:
I hope this helps, and we look forward to hearing from you.

When I login to WordPress.com and look under “My Sites”, it shows these two:

The top one is correct. The second one is the one it created when I tried to sign up for the annual plan today. If I click on the top one, I start to see errors. But if I click on the Posts menu button, I can see my 109 Published Posts even though it also says I don’t have any content yet.

Also, the messages icon on the top-right shows recent comments on the blog. Somehow this site seems to have fallen into limbo in the last few weeks. Not sure how it got there or how to get it out.

Hi @joshwrightcom, I did a little digging to understand what I’m seeing.
It looks like you’ve had a WordPress site for many years, but it wasn’t hosted here with us. It was a free copy of WordPress (here’s the difference). It had been connected through Jetpack to our interface and apps. It was hosted somewhere else (like GoDaddy maybe) and had been using Cloudflare.
a few weeks back I started getting error pages. So I login to wordpress.com and see the blog, but no domains and I get errors for the WP-Admin pages.
I can see my 109 Published Posts even though it also says I don’t have any content yet.
Jetpack knows you had 109 posts, but it’s not currently connected to your installation. It couldn’t access it because of the errors you were getting.
And it looks like you bought a new plan here with us, starting a fresh site. We’d love to host you here, and from what I can see on archive.org, your site would be a great fit for our Personal or Premium plans. But I can only imagine you don’t want to start fresh!
I can think of a few options for getting your content back. You will want to point your domain back to the old provider first. Note it can take a few hours for the domain changes to take effect again. Then, when the domain is connected with the server that has your content:
- Did you happen to be using Jetpack Backup or something similar? Jetpack’s Backup is a paid service; if you have that you could just restore the site from one of its good backups.
- You may also have backups at your current host that you could restore to a point just before the errors started.
- If you don’t have backups, you’ll want to fix the errors instead. That’ll likely be through your wp-admin or your hosting panel, and the folks in the WordPress.org support forums can likely help you find resources if you want to search for and share the errors you’re getting.
Once you’ve got the site back up, if you’d like to move it to our managed services, we’ll be here to help!
In the meantime, you can cancel the Personal Plan here and get your refund until you’ve got your content and want to move it here. OR, if you just want to start fresh here now, you can. I just know if I were in your shoes I’d want the content back first, and I’m hoping those ideas help!

Thanks so much for your help on this @supernovia. I didn’t remember setting it up on wordpress.com, but was trying to figure out who the host was. When I logged in and saw my comments and posts, I assumed I’d found it. Actually I still don’t really understand how that happens, but I’ve got enough info to move on. Thanks again for your help

You bet @joshwrightcom. And yeah, the .com interface at this point is more of an echo of the site. If you had a Jetpack backup you could restore it through that. I don’t think you do, but the other tips in this guide may be useful for you anyway.
Other recommended steps for now:
- Point the domain back to the old provider so you can work through any troubleshooting needed
- Consider whether you want to cancel the upgrade here. If you won’t be using it soon, you’ll want to cancel before 14 days and it will auto-refund for you.
I hope you can get the site up and going again soon!
