Need help Rebuilding

    Hello,

I’m trying to build a WP site for our Gaming Group. Our Previous Site ran for 5 years without issue before a major outage by our Service Provider killed it. They had a Server Farm go down, then when they attempted to ‘Rebuild’ our site and get it going again, it started working sort of, but with a 60-90 second load time on every single page. Something they never seemed to be able to reproduce (shock) and then were unwilling to help with. We have since left them.

Now I tried to rebuild this with a fresh WP.org installation but imported 5 years of content from a single WP import XML file, always seemed to kill it. It would get about 1/2 the content but after about 3 hours of importing, it would usually fail. I chock that up to a server timeout. Which doesn’t surprise me…. the XML file is nearly 9 MB’s Huge and always seemed to time out, which I don’t blame them for.

Now I’m wondering if it would be possible to rebuild this as a WP.com site, and if so could I send this Import File to WP staff in hopes they would be able to import it in a way that wouldn’t timeout?

Also we had come up with highly modified theme that we wanted to use, and wonder if that would be usuable as well?

  • Hi @primar13, the highly modified them wouldn’t work here, but we could help you import your content to WordPress.com if you didn’t mind using our available themes and plugins.

One thing you might try, too, is just clearing any spam comments out of the old installation before exporting. You’d be surprised how much space they can take up and how many problems they can cause with imports. There are plugins available that make it relatively quick and painless. Just be sure you have backups first, of course.
