Need help to find the best theme to use

My current theme is Ocean Mist. I’ve decided I need a static main page, blog and other pages (probably including nested pages). I would like the buttons to be on the top of the page. I’d also like to hide the sidebar on all pages except the blog. I need a header I can customise too. Can anyone suggest themes that have all these features?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

We cannot really suggest any, because they are too many: all themes support a static front plus blog and other pages, most of them have the navigation menu at the top, most of them support a header image, and many of them allow you to hide the sidebar on static pages. So start by browsing the Theme Showcase:
    http://theme.wordpress.com/
You can read about all themes and see them in action (note that some of the live demos don’t have a header image although the theme supports it). Once you find some themes you like, we can tell you of they allow you to hide the sidebar.

Ok, I’ll have a search over the next couple days and come back to you. Are there themes that allow you to hide the sidebar on all pages except the blog?

I’ve had a look at some themes and found a few that might be what I want. I forgot to mention previously that I want the blog/posts page to be only 2 columns. When I searched for 2 columns I didn’t get many results. Here’s the 4 themes that seem to suit best: Ocean Mist (my current), MistyLook, Twenty Ten and Bouquet. I also want to keep the Links at the top of the sidebar and Categories at the bottom. Can anyone tell me which of the themes I’ve chosen can do what I want (as in my original post)? Thanks for any help you can give me.

There is a search filter here that you can use to locate themes with specific features http://wordpress.com/themes/ Note that we Volunteers do not assist with theme selection as it’s subjective decision making process and there are over 200 themes. We are focused on providing assistance with support issues only.

Twenty Ten and Bouquet allow you to remove the sidebar on static pages, but Ocean Mist and MistyLook don’t. All the other things you mentioned are possible on all four themes.

But I’m surprised to see you say you didn’t get many results for 2-column themes: 2-column themes are the majority. If you filter for two columns in the Theme Showcase site, you get 175 results:
    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/two-columns/
Excluding the “premium” themes leaves you with around 120 themes.

PS Obviously timethief is speaking for herself only: I do help with theme selection, and there’s nothing subjective about whether a theme does or doesn’t support certain options.

Thanks for your help again, both of you. When I looked at Twenty Ten and Bouquet I thought that the post categories in the sidebar show at the top. Currently I have links above the categories and twitter feed – and that’s the order I want them in.

Maybe I only got a few results for 2 column themes because I wrote 2 as ‘two’. I will search again with the link you have given me, Justpi, and see if there’s any others that might fit the bill. So far Twenty Ten and Bouquet are the ones that do what I’m looking for. It will be tomorrow night before I can search again then I will check back.

Pages show in the tabbed header, not post categories unless you are using a custom menu.

I just had a quick look – what about MistyLake (or is it very similar to MistyLook?) or BookLite?

  • Unknown's avatar

MistyLake was designed to replace MistyLook. If it functions the way you like, try it out. In my experience most people change themes two or three times over the first three months.

MistyLake will do. BookLite doesn’t have a sidebar.

The order of the sidebar items isn’t theme dependent. You add whatever widgets you want, in whatever order you please.

Thanks justpi. Will try MistyLake and see how it goes.

One last question – after previewing the other themes I have gone for Twenty Ten. I’ve hidden the sidebar on pages (but not the blog) and got the page order set up.

Can I hide the box for comments that appears at the bottom of each page? I don’t want to hide it on the blog/posts page but I don’t want it on the other pages. If it’s possible can you refer me to information about how to do it?

    Thanks for all your patience!

    You’re welcome.

Thanks once again Justpi. I’ve got the theme, hidden the sidebar and removed the comments on pages. Thank you for all your help. Now I’ve got my site set up as a website, just like I wanted it. I wouldn’t have been able to do so without help as I hadn’t found information about what the themes could and couldn’t do anywhere else. I appreciate it.
