Need help with antique site

    Hi

I need help updating a twelve year old free site. Specifically, I’ve removed all content from the slide-bar but cannot get rid of the slide-bar icon. Ideally I would also go for a new theme but don’t want to risk losing all the customising I’ve done with Scrawl.

Plan is to upgrade to paid version but I want to get my site working first.

    Hi there!

So the theme you’re using doesn’t have the option to hide the sidebar toggle icon. If you switched to a newer theme that uses the Site Editor, pretty much all aspects of the theme could be customized. I understand you would like to avoid changing the theme. Would you be interested in any of the features the WordPress.com Explorer plan offers?

I mention this because one of the features included in the WordPress.com Explorer plan is the ability to add custom CSS code to your site. CSS code is used to modify visual elements on a website. We can provide you with the CSS code to hide the toggle. However, your site needs to be on the WordPress.com Explorer plan or higher in order to accept custom CSS code.

Feel free to check out the Explorer plan’s features. If you decide to upgrade, please do so using the button below and let us know once done. We’ll give you the CSS code to add to your site that hides the sidebar toggle.

As you already paid for the WordPress.com Starter plan, you can upgrade to the Explorer plan by only paying the difference between the two plans. You’ll see this on the plans page that you have credits from the existing plan when you go to upgrade.

Feel free to let us know if you have more questions.

    Thanks aisajib

I feared it was a limitation of the theme. I don’t need the Explorer pack Put would be happy to change theme if I can retain or easily transfer all my customisation.

  • Hey @aveburypress,

What kind of customization are you looking to transfer? Generally, theme customizations do not transfer when changing themes, but some things like custom CSS may transfer well or be reproducible.

    Thanks!

    Hi Staff-Dragon.

Basically, I’ve stripped out what was there. No colour theme. No menus. No side bars. No recent posts. Just a white space. It was a PITA to do and I don’t want to do it again!

If there’s a theme that has nothing on it I’ll take it!

    Colin.

“If there’s a theme that has nothing on it I’ll take it!”

The Intentionally Blank theme is exactly what its name suggests: a completely blank canvas. However, you’ll need a Creator plan to use it.

Once you have access, you can personalize it by adding blocks such as the Query Loop Block and navigation blocks via the Site Editor to create a minimalist blog theme.

Alternatively, there’s the Assembler theme, which is free and offers a nice minimalist design. It also utilizes the Site Editor, allowing you to easily customize it to your preferences.

I hope this information is helpful! Feel free to ask if you have any further questions.
