Need help with domain name change and plan
-
And again, this is the path I recommend assuming you intend to keep running the old site as a separate site. Let us know if you have more questions.
-
2) When you are ready, you can buy a plan for the other site. It will not be discounted because it will include a domain credit, but you will be able to use that domain credit as you like.
Hi Supernovia,
Yes, I was able to delete the test site.
I do not want to do #2 because my new blog will not be worth $50 of hard earned money to spend on it in my opinion. I am willing to spend $28 if I need to. I just like the Personal plan for the included support. Having a custom domain name is convenient for readers or searching, but is not necessary for a casual blog in my opinion unlike the current semi-pro blog I have now.
I think the only option at this point is to just have no support and both blogs on the free plan unregistered. My concern there is that my domain name can be taken from any time.

Well, don’t I have to have the old site separate? Otherwise, I would have to shut it down so I can change it or make changes live, which would be very messy and likely blow up the internet.
-
Also, what about available free themes for the new site? If I switch the current site to the free plan and have the new site on the same, can I use one of the free themes in my dashboard since there is more there?
-
So I take it there is no way to get the upgrade price unless I renew my current blog?
I can’t switch domain names for registration under the upgrade price?
Again, my concern with the free plan and no registration is:
1) no support
2) My domain names can be taken from me anytime. -

Again, my concern with the free plan and no registration is:
1) no supportWe are not able to offer a plan with a domain at the price you are asking, because domains and support have cost on our end that we need to cover, too. Again, you were offered a discount for this year because you already have a domain. If you want to have a plan for a separate site, with a domain, you’ll need to pay the regular plan price. We’ll let you think it over and decide what works best for you.
However,
2) My domain names can be taken from me anytime.
This is not true. Your free WordPress.com addresses can’t be taken away. Only custom (paid) domains can be taken, and only if you don’t pay for them.
-
Ah ,the problem is I have a domain I can’t use with my new blog, so that is why I don’t want to renew it. I’d rather use my new domain.
So I guess after a month of being told promises that were not true such as if i add my new domain to my account, switch my current domain to non-custom free and have the plan added manually, I could use the credit for the new domain name through the upgrade and such like that. It was all carrot and stick.
So the only thing I can do is not renew my current domain and have the new blog on the free account as well and hope for the best and if I need help then I’m screwed.
The unanswered questions to that are:
1) Will I be able to use the free themes available on my dashboard account if I do not have registered domains anymore?
2) Will switching my old domain now work for the search engines or will it be disabled? -
I don’t see any other way of working on building my new blog while keeping the current one going while I do so.
-
If they are separate sites, just keep them both open. Are you running into a problem with that?
And again, you can (currently) buy the domain using the existing site, and have us move it over. It just would not come with a plan that way. If you want to do that, here are the steps:
1) buy the new domain
2) create the new site with a free domain
2) ask us to transfer the new domain to the free site
Again, this may not always be an option as we have moved away from domain-only sites, but if you decide to do that now it will work, too.
Signing out for the night. Let us know what you decide to do.

Yes, they will be separate only because I am changing content and therefore need to change the domain name, otherwise it won’t make much sense to people. (It would be like having a site about apples, but the domain name is oranges).
I’m not opposed to keeping both sites open either. I will need to do that for a time at first until I complete the new one and then leave both going for a couple of months after that. The original plan was to retire my current/old site in a few months as I have no plan to update it or anything anymore after June. Of course, I can stay with that scenario and just set the old one as non-active in the dashboard when that time comes.I take it I would still need to switch the old domain now to the free version so that the links will work in search engines and my readers will be able to get to my old site?
Let’s see, a new domain would be $28, ok. Besides just having the “custom domain name” (nameblog.com instead of nameblog.wordpress.com), what are the other advantages to buying the domain?
If there are other advantageous things to buying the domain, I can do that and have you move it, it’s just that without a plan, I would have no support should I need it. (It is my anticipation that I may need some support somewhere in the process or life of the blog). If I do as you suggest, how quickly would I have to create/build the new site and have it ready for launch? I can’t build a site and have it ready in a day or even a week. I need time.
Also, the free themes in the new site area are very limited and all just blank with nothing going on and don’t fit the blog I will be doing. Can I just choose one and then have more options in the dashboard and change it?
If there are not any further advantages outside of the removal of “.wordpress” in the domain name, then there would be no point in buying the domain and I would just leave both under the free account since I plan to retire the old one eventually and the new site is a bit more casual than the old one.
FYI: Differences in sites:
Current soon to be old site:
Album reviews (copying to new site)
tips and “how to” (copying to new site)
Articles about music (copying to new site)
Listing affordable pedigree audio playback gear available out in the wild, article discussions about audiophile concepts, audio philosophy, formats, arguments, etc.
News
Semi-pro design
business cards needed
deadlines as some articles need to be timely
Professional style writting
Being involved in the equipment and audiophile industry a little more than comfortable with.
Makes sense to have a custom domain name without the “wordpress.com”New site:
About music, philosophy, spirituality, emotional intelligence and health, the mind and how it is all linked together with music
Album reviews (but not in the complete traditional technical based style)
A mundane section for tips and “how to” and the like (not much of that as I already wrote most of it for the old site and not much left to write. I just want to always offer it up as it is important for several reasons)
What is also different for the new site:
No more gear listing and keeping up with it
No deep involvement in the gear and material side of the industry
No more audiophile type discussion articles
No business cards needed
No deadlines (I can post or not post whenever for all things)
A more casual or relaxed feel overall for me anyway.
The mission for the current/old site has been accomplished and it is time to move on to the next step in the overall mission of helping people get back in touch with their music and learn about working with it to bring about connection with others and healing to themselves, others and ultimately, the world. -
– These are the free themes available: https://wordpress.com/themes/free . As Herman mentioned earlier, we only show a few during signup, but you’ll have access to all free themes after that.
– If you buy a custom domain, it is just that: a custom domain. No extra advantages. This is why we generally only offer them as part of plans now.
I take it I would still need to switch the old domain now to the free version so that the links will work in search engines and my readers will be able to get to my old site?
– Yes

Ah, ok. Got it
While I am assuming that if I bought a domain for the new blog it would be offered to renew in a year at a discounted rate, I am going to forego that because that is a year without support, so why pay for that?
If I was still doing the content and the aspect of my mission in my current site, I would have renewed under the plan, but I am not. So I am going to just switch my current site to Free so the search engines can switch and have both my old and new sites on the Free account for the time being. (I don’t know if a month is long enough for that process, but I hope so).I know it will be harder for people to find me with the Free account. I also know that due to that, my traffic on my new site will be a fraction of what it was on my old one even if some readers from my old site follow me to the new site. I am likely to have very little traffic forever on my new site, which is par for the course.
(I do not advertise because I am not wired that way and it is never warranted in my book. If it is of interest it will grow organically). If I run across anything requiring support that I can not find in the help section, I’m just out of luck and depending on what it is, I will just have to shut down completely. I don’t foresee that being a common scenario, but you never know.
Thanks for the help.

Do note the only thing that’s going to hold you back from people finding your site is the fact that you’re letting your old domain expire. So the longer overlap you have with the new (free) primary domain, the better.
Good luck now!
-
I’m not sure I understand. Won’t it help if I just change my current domain to the (free) domain and keep it the primary for now while I build the new one? Then when the new one is ready I can switch them, can’t I?
If that is not the case, then I am screwed and will have to just shut down everything and forget it. I can not build a new site in a weekend. That is impossible for me. I am not a pro webmaster or designer.
-
Since you’ll keep both sites and they aren’t related, I wouldn’t switch anything except the primary domain on the existing site, as we mentioned earlier. I’d just do that ASAP. Hope that helps.

Yes, switching my primary domain on my current site is what I thought I was supposed to do, so I will do that tonight or tomorrow.
What about when my new site is ready? Do I also make it primary when ready? (It will of course show under my account). Otherwise, how will people find it, let alone search engines?
-
Ok, I have successfully switched my primary domain to the free one.
So what happens when I am ready to launch my new one and want to keep the old one up for a couple of months or so as well?
-
Hi –
The sites are going to function independent of one another correct? If that’s the case, then there’s nothing else that you need to do.

Yes, they are, but my question is that they will both be in my Dashboard and showing under domains, so can they both be set to “Primary”? (The only interaction will be me copying some stuff from the “old” site to the new).
I ask because I want to have the old site active for a month or two after I activate the new site and then I plan on shutting down the old one. -

Yes. The domains are separated from each other since they are acting independent from one another. We can help with this once you get to that point.
