Need help with domain transfer

  • Unknown's avatar

I own my own domain name and want to transfer it to WordPress. Unfortunately The host I currently use (your-site.com) never answers customer service emails or phone calls and I cannot find a domain authorization code to make the transfer. What do I do?

  • What is the domain name you’re trying to transfer?

    kessho.net

I have owned it since 2002. Your-site.com registered it for me but I can no longer access the DNS control panel they provide. I sent an email requesting the auth code but have not yet heard back from them.

  • Unfortunately the registrar where your domain is currently registered are the only people who can provide you with a transfer code.

However, it looks like Your-site.com is just a domain reseller. According to the Whois database, the registrar of record for your domain is Tucowsdomains.com, so you can try reaching out to them directly. If you were to lodge a complaint about this to ICANN (which is another option) Tucows would ultimately be on the hook for it, so they might be able to help you.

Thank you for the info! I have sent an email to Tucows regarding the issue. I still have not heard a word from Your-Site. Should I give it 5 business days to hear from Tucows before I send a complaint to ICANN?

  • @awarmplace I’d give them a reasonable time to respond, then work with ICANN. When something similar happened to me, the registrar tried to contact the reseller. After a few days without a response, they took the domain into their account.

staff-blorbo , @kokkieh , @supernovia – thank you all for your help with my problem. It took over the weekend to get Tucows to reply but the password was reset and an authorization code was sent. I initiated a transfer but apparently that takes several days – it was started on Tuesday, still pending – but Your-Site was more than happy to immediately cancel my hosting. Considering their poor customer service, I was surprised at how quick that response came, especially since they’ve continued to ignore my open ticket about the authorization code.

I guess I’m stuck until the transfer is completed. Hopefully it will go through fine and this will all be over.

  • If you still have access to the domain under Tucows, you can try mapping it for now, that should take much less time to go through than the transfer: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-existing-domain/
