need help with domains

I need help with domains. I have a wordpress.com website that I have had for several years. I decided to not use it any more so I didn’t renew my plan nor did I renew my domain name. now I have decided to use it again. whe website has reveerted to a free website from wordpress. I purchased a new plan and was able to get the same domain name through Bluehost and had them host it for me. Since then I have been having trouble propagating the DNS records. I called Bluehost and they said the problem is that they give a free website through wordpress.org, and that I needed to contact WordPress.com for answers. Well that is impossible. no one responds to even a chat session. therfore I called Bluehost again and had the cancel and refund me the cost for the hosting, whic they did. I go back to my admin site and it still shows the address that I cancelled as my primary address, although I have never been able git the site up and running as I did when I originally had the site made. now I am ready to use a new domain name. What is my next step. I purchased the new plan on a monthly basis so I don’t get a free domain with it. Do I just sign up for hosting with WordPress.com and choose a new domain name? And should I just leave the existing domain name on on my site, or do I need to remove it since it has been cancelled.
