I currently administer a blog/site for an organization. This site was originally setup by another person for the organization and that person has left the organization. I’ve been the site admin for a couple years now and have been able to renew our site domain subscription in the past. For some reason this year, It won’t let me do the renewal. It states ‘This subscription was originally purchased by another user. Please ask the subscription owner to renew the subscription.’ How can I get this fixed so that in the future we don’t get this error when we change admins of our blog site? – Thanks, Joey

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

This site was originally setup by another person for the organization and that person has left the organization.

Businesses, organizations and groups of any kind do not own blogs. Every WordPress.COM blog has a sole owner. It is the person with the WordPress.COM username account who registered the blog under that username account and a single associated email address, and who is the original Admin of the blogs registered under that username account.

Only one Admin per blog is recommended.

You have to be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchased the upgrade to access the blog’s dashboard and renew the upgrade(s).

And, as you are not the site’s owner, you have to contact them as they can transfer the blog and upgrades to another username account.

Thanks for the reply. We’ve had this blog since 2012 as an organization blog with 3 admins. The person that originally setup the blog is no longer available.

Last year as the admin I was able to renew it myself under my login ID. This year it doesn’t let me. I need another solution as the one you present is not an option. I appreciate the response though.

It looks as though you were able to get this sorted out.

Be advised that going forward, the upgrade owner will need to do the renewal. Other site admins will not be able to pay for renewals they do not own. If you have multiple people as admins of a site, I would suggest that you transfer all upgrades to a permanent, generic, admin account that is used for that purpose and is owned by the “organization” rather than any one person.
