Need help with HTML codes?

  I am currently on free WordPress with a paid domain. I need to post really simple HTML code onto the homepage. As I understand it, I need the appearance tab to do this. It is nowhere to be seen on my dashboard. Can you locate it for me? Do I need paid plan to have the tab? I have limited knowledge in WordPress, so your help would be much appreciated.

  I'm asking because we have code restrictions https://en.support.wordpress.com/code/ and the software will strip put any unsupported embed codes, javascript, iframe codes or codes containing advertising.
