need help with image template changes

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m struggling to understand the changes in the image templates and here’s my first problem: my latest post has a gallery within it and a reader posted a comment to the “brown herringbone” image. But when I click on that image in the post, I only see the enlarged image, with no place for comments, but when I click on that image’s title on my Top Posts lists, the image is shown in the new (?) format, with two thumbnails and her comment is there. What am I missing? TIA.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

What I am missing is both the “brown herringbone” image and the “Top Posts lists”. Where are they?

My apologies, panaghiotisadam. The “brown herringbone” image, aka “HB stripe brown,” is a thumbnail in my latest post, 2009 Weave of the week #40. It is also listed in today’s Top posts & pages, on my blog stats page. Hope that helps. (Images weren’t listed in Top posts & pages before the format change, were they?)

When you click the image you see an enlarged version because the image in your post is a linked thumbnail. A big thumbnail, nevertheless a thumbnail. That is because you are using the Link URL setting, see 2nd figure from top here
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/image-settings/#within-posts.
That is just to bring up the image, not the post. You can avoid this by selecting a “None” Link URL setting.

To see the individual post (and be able to comment) readers must click the title or the “# responses” link below the title just for seeing the comments only.

This is how the blog is meant to work.

    @husdal: It’s a gallery, not individual images.

@buyathread: “Image is shown in the new (?) format, with two thumbnails and her comment”. That sounds like an attachment page. I don’t see how a visitor can get to that, since you’ve set the gallery thumbnails to link to the original images, not attachment pages. Unless you originally did the latter, got the comment, then edited the post to change the gallery setting. Let me know if that’s the case.

@ husdal – Thank you for the link.

@ panaghiotisadam – I haven’t changed a thing since I posted. And that’s why I have been so bewildered by how the comment got on that thumbnail. When I uploaded the 6 gallery images into my post, I just left whatever the default link setting was.

    Then I’m baffled too…

Can you see that comment in your dashboard?

  • Unknown's avatar

Uh-oh, that’s a really bad sign if you’re baffled too.

The comment is on my dashboard just like every other comment. I approved it and then couldn’t find it anywhere. I thought the mystery was solved when I clicked on HB stripe brn on my Posts & pages, and voila! but that only confused me more.

Location of the uploaded file is, http://buyathread.wordpress.com/files/2009/10/hb-brn.jpg.

And this is the attachment page:

    HB-brn

Funny thing is one cannot access that by clicking anything on your blog (as far as I can tell); I was able to access it because I know what the URL of an attachment page is supposed to be like.

Anyway, what you can do is: copy comment and its data (commenter’s nick, URL, mail etc.), log out, submit comment to post, log in again, edit comment to restore original data.

Sorry for misunderstanding what the whole thing was about. As to attachment pages, I’ve had many visitors land on them from Google image searches. And the thumbnails below are the previous/next attachment pages, such that in the case of a gallery it works like a flip-through photo album. While the attachment page itself is not a bad thing, the annoying thing is it’s impossible to turn off the comments. Every media file attached to a post has an attachment page, apparently even if you select “File URL” in the image settings.

“As to attachment pages, I’ve had many visitors land on them from Google image searches.”

Aha! Thanks – didn’t know that.

“And the thumbnails below are the previous/next attachment pages.”

(That, I know.) Up to now you got that in a few themes only – see here:
    http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/03/24/navigation-in-attachment-pages/
Tess just alerted me that it’s probably no longer so. Sooner or later I’ll check all themes, but I can’t do it at the moment.

“While the attachment page itself is not a bad thing, the annoying thing is it’s impossible to turn off the comments.”

    Not exactly – see here:

Thanks for the tip about the no-comments option. I’ve tried that before, and for some reason it didn’t work, but it did now. In some themes is still displays the “Leave a comment” message, though.

  • Unknown's avatar

Right (but that’s a problem with the themes’ comment tab in general, not the att. pages in particular).

@ panaghiotisadam/husdal – interesting, but this comment was from a regular poster, so it unlikely to have gotten there via google. As far as I am concerned, it will remain a mystery or a bug, and I’ll go back to trying to figure out the new system.

Thank you both very much for your conscientiousness & help.
