Need help with menu!
-
I would like to have two pages nested under one main title in the main menu. I want the title (About) to not be linked to anything so that there are only two linked page options underneath (the ones nested).
I can’t figure out how to do this! I tried following the tutorial but it didn’t work. Can someone please help me?

Please read this carefully http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/06/30/posts-on-pages/ There are many common errors, misunderstandings and misconceptions when creating custom menus and there are some tweaks you can use to improve your custom menu as well. http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/custom-menus/
By default the front page of the blog is the post that displays all posts in your blog in reverse chronological order with the most recent post on top. Though there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts (not pages) http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ and we cannot post to more than that one page, we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page.
Among the most common misconceptions is that bloggers fail to understand is
(1) there is only one page we can post to in any blog and
(2) the static pages http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ they create do not automatically update. Please read this support doc as Pages and posts http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ are not the same.
Please also read this support doc as Pages (static) https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ and category pages (dynamic) https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/ are not the same.
Only the dynamic pages like Categories, Tags and Archives created by the software when we publish a post we that we have assigned Categories and Tags to will update automatically update. https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/
We organize posts by assigning categories to them. You can create a custom menu and add the dynamic categories pages into the custom menu.

re: changing the order of Pages, not Posts
There are two approaches.
1. If you have only pages in your horizontal menu and that’ is all you want in it see here to use numerical order. http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/page-attributes/#order
See also https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/page-attributes/#parent2. Creating a Custom Menu http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#creating-a-custom-menu

Changing the Order & Creating Sub-Menus http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#changing-the-order-creating-sub-menusCustom menu Troubleshooting – My pages are in the wrong order
Check the sub-pages themselves to see if you have established a Parent page and child page “hierarchical structure” in the page attributes module. Remove if required. Also remove any “order” numbers you have assigned that may conflict with the order you are creating by dropping and dragging. Or simply change them so they are the same order as you establish in the menu. Establish consistency – problem solved.

Hiya Rachel,
I took a look at your nested menu, and it appears to be working on your site in the same manner you’ve built it in your menu customizer:
https://livewellworryless.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.phpCould you tell me if you’ve figured out your own issue, or if you still need assistance, how all the headings should work. If you use specific menu tab names, then I can troubleshoot the problems you’re having, and help you with a solution.
Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.

Thanks for getting back to me! I am still looking for help on this issue.
I read that I can create a static parent page….almost like a place holder so that it will not link to anywhere? I would like my “About” parent page to not link to anything so that the only options to click on are the pages nested underneath.
Is this possible? How can I accomplish this?

Also – I’m trying to display my “home” page as a featured content page like the front page example in the Sketch Theme.
I added a “featured” tag in Appearances>Customize>Featured Content. I turned on the “Portfolio Page Template” for my front page. I used the “featured” tag and created a featured image for a post….but it won’t show up on my front page.
What am I doing wrong? Am I missing a step?

Hi Rachel,

Also – I’m trying to display my “home” page as a featured content page like the front page example in the Sketch Theme.
Those requests are two separate options. Do you want a static page, or do you want a dynamic page that displays featured content? You cannot do both.
I would like my “About” parent page to not link to anything so that the only options to click on are the pages nested underneath.
Just to be clear — if you do this, none of the content you’ve written on your About page will appear. Is this what you wish to do? We can create an About menu item that doesn’t open up — that only has drop-down items, but I want to make sure you know that nothing you’ve written on that page will be visible. Confirm that this is what you want, and also let me know which pages you do want to act as dropdown sub-menu items under About.
Once I have that information from you, I can assist.
Thanks. -
Hi thatrobyn,
I would like to create an About menu item that doesn’t open up with the following drop-down pages: About this Blog, My Story, Contact
Could you help me understand how to do it in case I want to do something like this again for another set of pages?I would also like to try the dynamic page that displays featured content to see what this will be like. Can I always change it back to a static page if I change my mind?
Thanks so much for your help!!

Hey Rachel!
Thanks for further explaining what you want to accomplish!
Let’s start with the ABOUT menu tab with the drop down items: About this blog, My story, and Contact.
- First, open your menu customizer here:
https://livewellworryless.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php - In the left-hand column, you’ll see the box where you can add pages. Below that, there is a tab to add Links. Click that.
- In the Link Text area you’ll type, “ABOUT.” In the URL area, you’ll type a # sign. Then, add that item to the menu.
- Delete the ABOUT page link you added earlier, and drag/drop the ABOUT link you just created. Place it anywhere you wish, and drag the submenu items beneath it.
Then, save your menu. That will create the drop down menu item you want.
I would also like to try the dynamic page that displays featured content to see what this will be like. Can I always change it back to a static page if I change my mind?
You can always change back to a static page, if you wish.
To create a dynamic page with featured content, go to the link below:
https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sketch/Focus specifically on the area called Featured Content, and follow those instructions. Because you only have one post, your option are limited. The more content with Featured Images you add, the more you can add to that slider.
Give those instructions a try, and as you work your way down the steps, if you need assistance, let me know where you’re stuck.
Thanks much!

Hi thatrobyn,
Thanks for your help! I was able to get the About menu tab to work like we talked about.
I am still having trouble with the dynamic page issue. I followed the instructions exactly on the link but still nothing is displayed on my front page. My featured image does not show up and there is no slider. I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong? Even when I change the front page from static to latest blog posts, still nothing shows up.
Is there something I’m missing? I would like to have specific posts featured on my main front page.
Thanks!

I also noticed that my featured image for my post does not show up when you click on the post. Is there a way to fix this?

Hi there!
The Sketch theme only offers a slider on the Portfolio page template. In order to have that slider appear, you’ll need to update the page template for your front page:
https://livewellworryless.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=85&action=edit
I also noticed that my featured image for my post does not show up when you click on the post. Is there a way to fix this?
By default, the Sketch theme does not show the Featured Image on the single post page. If you want it to appear on the single post page, you’ll need to add the image to your post content as well as setting it as your Featured Image.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have more questions. :)
