Need help with Recent Posts widget

  • Unknown's avatar

I am using the Recent Posts widget and can’t figure out how to show a thumbnail beside each post. I have just updated and redone my blog and I previously had this feature but can’t seem to find it with my new template. Does that mean it’s not an option? Thanks so much for your help?

    Hi Jamie,

The Recent Posts widget does not support thumbnails. However, the “Display WordPress Posts” widget does, and you could use that to display recent posts from your own site and include the thumbnails of the featured image next to them instead.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thank you for your suggestion which I forward to my website guy since it seemed beyond my skill set. He did not have success and here is reply:

I’ve played around with this a bit more using the suggested search
parameters. That led me to a number of solutions involving php code. All of these solutions proved to work only in custom designed sites where there was full access to the templates containing the underlying code.

Unfortunately, that leads us back to the limitation of being hosted on
wordpress.com: no access to the templates and underlying code. There does happen to be a plugin which allows one to insert php code in a page (an alternative way to do what we want), but wp.com doesn’t allow users to install plugins on the free hosted platform. UGH!

Can you please let me know if he is missing something or if you have other suggestions. He is recommending I move my site to Go Daddy.
    Thank you.

There are no restrictions when having a self-hosted WordPress.org site. We have hosting recommendations at the following link if you are interested:

To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities. At WordPress.com, we provide hosting, support, and tons of features for blogs. Users also have the option to purchase a variety of upgrades to customize the look and feel of their blog. WordPress.org is a software for self-hosted sites. With WordPress.org, users are provided access to all backend files and can upload custom themes and plugins.
