Need Help with XML and WXR importing on WordPress
-
I have been doing everything but nothing seems to be working to import my content to the website. And nothing is working. Everything keeps failing. The XML file doesnt work and then the WXR code doesn’t work either. I originally converted it from a JSON.

Hi there, please let us know the address of the site you need help with so we can take a look.

I haven’t released it yet as I am really trying to figure things out.
You will see some drafts, but those I manually moved from Ghost to here. -
The WPcom site can handle import WXR or XML up to 15MB. If your file is larger than that you may need to break it down into smaller files.
Since I’m not certain how WPcom handles export files from Ghost, I’ve also flagged this thread for Staff attention.
-
The XML file was 1.5 MB after conversion. And I have googled extensively on how to break it down but I am not a tech-savvy, so it felt like I am pulling out my hair.
One website heavily suggested downloading a plug-in, but that would mean that I have to upgrade to business, in order to do that.
I don’t fully understand the process to break down the XML file.

Did Ghost provide the WXR file, or did you have to convert it after?
If so, how did you convert it?
-
Hi there,
No Ghost did not provide a WXR file. I exported my items in a JSON file. Used several websites to convert to a XML, as they all varied in size. After multiple attempts with the converted JSON files, they were not being imported to WP. So that’s when I added the </wrx…..>” code on all the converted files, but still no change. Here are a few of the websites I used to convert my items.
1. http://ahmed.amayem.com/ghost-json-export-file-to-wordpress-xml-import-file-converter/
2. https://www.freeformatter.com/json-to-xml-converter.html
3. https://www.convertjson.com/json-to-xml.htm
4. https://codebeautify.org/jsontoxml
5. https://jsonformatter.org/json-to-xml
6. https://onlinexmltools.com/convert-json-to-xmlUsed all of these to convert the JSON file but still nothing worked when I tried to import the files. It has been very taxing.
-
That does sound terrible.
Here’s my advice. Hold onto the original JSON file, but convert it to WXR.
Then, export your existing WP.com site (the one you’re trying to import into.)
Open a text editor and compare the two, especially in the first several lines. What are the major differences?
If you do, you can likely see what needs to be added, or taken from, the WXR to make it match the same format.
If you cannot, please upload the file to /media . If we can spot the issue we’ll let you know.
Also, quick question: I’m not terribly familiar with Ghost, but when you exported did you have any spam comments? Did you have any embedded iframes, or scripts? I’m wondering if it’s stuck on that.
-
Pardon the tardy response. I had a few things going on.
There’s nothing online about converting the JSON to WXR, they suggest XML first.
So I have exported the WP.com per your suggestion.
At the moment, I am a bit confused, and having trouble adding the files to the media section of the blog
And to answer your question, no. No comments at all. The theme I used didn’t have any sadly. I have no idea about the embedded iframes or scripts.
-
Yes, we do not allow certain tags on WordPress.com, for security reasons, including JavaScript, Flash, iframe, form, and input tags – so that may be contributing to the issue.
These restrictions are in place to prevent any disruptions in service due to potentially malicious code.
You can read more about this here:
Is it possible to upload the file somewhere like Dropbox and provide us a link so that we can take a look?

Ah nevermind, I’ve found it. I’m doing an import to a test site now.
If that works, may we try importing it into your site for you?
-
Yes please!! You are welcome to import it.
Thanks in advance!Would you mind importing my images on WP as well please? Every time I tried, nothing came of it.
Here is the link with the file.

Hm, still having some issues with the images, we’ll try a few other things and get back to you.

Good morning!
Sounds good!
How is it going with importing the Ghost blog posts into WP?
Can you also install Markdown for me please and thank you?
-
Hi there,
Our team is working on it and we’ll update you here when it’s done. Also, Markdown is supported on all WordPress.com sites:
-
Hi @shannakaycummings, we can’t install Markdown on a free site, and I suspect Markdown could be one thing that’s caused some trouble with images.
I am able, so far, to get the content in place, but not the images yet. I’m going to try one more thing. If all else fails, though, would you be willing to edit your posts manually and adjust the images?
