Need parameters for ‘the_post()’

  What I’m trying to do is set the site to display ten posts per page, except on the home page where I have multiple loops calling up posts in several categories, and I only want the first post in each of those categories to display.

  I’m thinking there should be a parameter that calls for only the most recent post, but I can’t find anything in the codex. The Template Tags page doesn’t include “the_post” and where I do find it mentioned in the codex, there’s nothing about its parameters.

  Or if there’s some other way to go about doing this, I’d appreciate that info.
