Need serious advice about moving from WordPress.org to .com

When you import a blog – there should be a box to check that will transfer the linked images to your new site – sorry can’t remember the exact point – but when I transferred here the pictures in my Posts & Pages did transfer, if that did not happen nobody could move a site

Well, that explains it. I just checked and all of my images are unattached. I thought they automatically attached when you hit the “add media” button while writing a new post. I can go through and attach them, but then I wonder what will happen if I try to re-import.

    Aargh.

    Choose what to export

    All content

This will contain all of your posts, pages, comments, custom fields, terms, navigation menus and custom posts.

I looked at my Dashboard and did check the support doc’s – the media is not mentioned as being transferred and the instructions did not have a way to specifically show Media being transferred – I looked at the Import and Export options on a test blog – and I am a bit confused with the new instructions

So I have flagged this for the staff attention –

when I moved to here – the media did transfer – there were some issues with file names – but the media did transfer – a requirement since the old site was shut down and the domain name mapped to a site here

    Thank you, auxclass.

If it turns out that I have to re-upload photos, I’ll just try to think of it as changing to a new theme. Last time I did that, I had to go into every post and realign the photos, because the formatting didn’t carry over (first theme was free WordPress, second was purchased custom). I also had to create and upload preview images for posts, which took for-freaking ever.

Hopefully this will be the last time I ever have to do that.

    You be welcome

You should not need to upload the media again

That would be great. But I’ll need to figure out whether I have to go through and attach the images to a post, as you suggest, or whether I can transfer the entire Media Library. Maybe there’s a support article that explains it??

You have to attach the images to a post. Images that are not in posts do not get imported.

    Thanks for the confirmation, Raincoaster.

So what happens if I attach the images and then try to import posts and pages again? Will the new import overwrite the old one, or will it create a holy mess?

  • Unknown's avatar

The former, as I understand things. It should only import things that were not imported before, like those images, any new comments, etc.

That would be fabulous! I’ve attached a couple of months’ worth of images and will do a test right now.

    Thanks!

WHOA! It’s importing all images, not just the couple of dozen I attached for testing purposes. The ones I attached are listed as such.

So now the question is, when I remap my domain, will all of the images go where they’re supposed to, and not just the ones I attached?

Again, sorry if this is answered elsewhere. Would be happy to consult support articles, if someone could point me in the right direction.

Think I have answered that question. I just opened a post with an unattached image and clicked on it to see the source. It is on wordpress.com and not my self-hosted server.

    YAY!!!

I think I can close this thread, as I’ve decided to go with WordPress.com. Once I get my e-mail set up and domain transferred over, I’ll see whether there is any benefit to upgrading to premium. Right now, I can’t see that there is. The 2012 theme works really nicely. The customizable menu is awesome, and I can have something like the home page I had before. But we’ll see…

Thank you to everyone who replied! This has been a great help. (If it weren’t considered so bad, I’d have put that in all caps. :-))
