Need suggestion for best way to transition to new theme when themes are differen

  • Unknown's avatar

My current site is http://www.doantrevor.com. I am going to revamp it and transition to a new premium theme ForeFront. Since the two themes are laid out quite differently – and I would like to make use of the Grid page in ForeFront, it will most likely take me some time to make the switch. I would like to make it as seamless as possible, but i know there will be quite a bit of tinkering. Is there a recommended way to do this? Create a duplicate site somehow? I’m not sure how to start.
    Thanks,
    Sue

Set up a second blog and keep it private.
Choose the premium theme for it to wear.
Export your blog / import it into the second blog.
Get your site working as you want it, adjusting post formats, featured images, custom excerpts, and all the new shiny things.
Transfer your premium theme to your “real” blog.
Import the content from your private experimental blog.

You may still need to make some minor under-the-hood adjustments but they most likely won’t take very long.

Okay, I’ll take this step by step…..
I will set up a second blog and title it “doantrevortest”. Then set it to private and export current blog and import it to the new blog. Buy the premium theme and start tweaking……….. did I get that right?

One more question I just thought of………. While I’m in the process of doing this, I will probably be adding new posts to the old site. How would I get them to show up on the new site when I switch over? Assuming that I have a time lag of several days between the old and the new site?

Yes, you have it right. Sorry for the delay in answering: as a volunteer I’m not here all the time.

You should be able to import the experimental site back into the original without disturbing the new posts you have added to your real site. But because it’s been quite a while since I’ve done that, I’ll modlook this topic for staff to look at.

If you want to move forward before they respond, I’d say export your “real” site just in case. I really don’t recall any problems when I’ve fooled around with my test blogs though.

    Thanks, 1tess,

I would rather wait and do it right, so I’ve subscribed and I’ll see what you guys think before I move anything. I’d rather be safe than sorry.

Thank you for volunteering. I appreciate your help.

Yes, better to get it right than be forced to fix it!

Most of the questions answered in these forums are provided by your fellow bloggers who volunteer: yes it is a weird hobby. Staff monitors and answers when we cannot help.

Best wishes for your new site!
