I recently upgraded to pro. Is there a step by step instruction on how to create a page with categories and drop downs for my travel blog? I have a linen theme.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

When you say page with categories and drop downs, are you looking to create a custom menu with subpages and drop downs as explained here?

    Menus

Additionally, you can create category pages that only display posts from a designated category. Instructions on doing that can be found here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/

If those aren’t what you’re looking for, please let me know a bit more information! I’ll be happy to help you figure it out.

Hello, and thank you for the reply. However, I don’t understand “tech language,” and the instructions on support are confusing to me. I am simply trying to give visitors an option, on the fist travel blog page of mine, to visit one of my 140 posts on travel to many different countries. I get lost with the simple term, “widget.” So, that’s my story. I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks again. Ron

    Hi Ron!

I’m happy to help a bit more. So I can provide the best instructions possible, I’d like to get a bit more information about how you would like your posts organized.

So, you would like a full list of all posts on your blog on your front page. That front page would replace your existing front page. Is that correct? How would you like your posts to be organized? Would you like them just listed by date (most recent first) or would you like them to be organized by something else (category for example)?

Thanks for providing the additional information! That will help me to point you in the right direction.

My current front page seems to be my latest blog. I would like to arrange titles by country, like several posts under “Travel Mongolia” or “Travel Sri Lanka” etc., so that visitors can click on a country and see several posts. I see this sort of listing on my blog, but it is way down at the bottom, on the side, where a visitor would need to scroll down many blog posts to get to it. I would like to move it to the top of blog, on the side is okay. Does that make sense?

    Hi there!

The best way to accomplish this would be to use the Display Posts shortcode:

    Display Posts Shortcode

In order to do so, follow these steps:

    1. Create a new page that will serve as your home page on your blog. You can title it whatever you want (“Home” generally works best).
    2. Create a new page that will serve as your Blog archive. Again, any name is suitable here but “Blog” typically works
    3. On your new “Home” page, we’re going to add your blog posts within categories. To do this, you’ll want to add a header for each section (in this case, each area of travel). The posts will be displayed beneath the particular header. For example, you’ll want to create a heading for “Travel Sri Lanka”. Your posts on traveling in Sri Lanka will be added underneath this heading. You will want to model these headings after your categories seen here:

      https://ronmitchelladventure.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category

We’ll be using the specific category names to determine which posts will be displayed.

    4. Under each heading, insert the following Display Posts shortcode:

      [display-posts category="Travel Mexico" posts_per_page="40"]

That code would display a list of posts in the “Travel Mexico” category. Up to 40 posts will be displayed (you can bump this number up if you would like). So, you’ll want to change the category based on the heading. Does that make sense? You can go through each of your main headings and display the correct posts.

    5. Now, once we have all of your posts displayed out under the correct headings, you’ll want to navigate to Dashboard -> Reading -> Settings. At the very top of the page, under “Front Page displays”, you’ll want to change it to “A static page”. Under the drop-down for Front Page, select your “Home” page. Under Posts page, select “Blog”.

That should get you most of the way there! Can you give that a try and let me know what questions you may run into along the way?

Again, I tried to understand the tech language. I’m not uneducated, but to me, this is almost as hard as an American trying to learn the Russian language. I guess I shall consider hiring somebody for help. Thanks for the referral links anyway. Ron

Hi! I don’t want you to have to hire someone. I’m happy to walk you through it! Have you given any of the steps a try? Can you let me know where you’re getting hung up?
