Need to cancel domain, wordpress.com won't reply to my messages!
-
Hi! Last week I bought a domain from wordpress.com, but found myself unable to make the kind of website I wanted using only CSS. According to WordPress.com, I could have my domain cancelled and refunded within 48 hours. On the second day, I tried to contact support, as advised by Wordpess. Unfortunately the WordPress.com contact support page was down for work. This text appeared:
“We’re closed over the weekend to work on making things better for you guys. We really appreciate your patience! The form will be open again at 12PM UTC on Monday 11th July.
In the meantime, please use the search box below, it may help you find a solution to your problem. Alternatively, the WordPress.com Forums are still available for general questions and help.”
On Monday I tried to contact support again. This text appeared:

On Tuesday, when the contact support page finally was up and running again, I wrote WordPress.com, asking them to cancel my domain. I pointed out that because my contacting WordPress late about canceling my domain was due to their own technical problems, I would like them to delete my domain even after the given 48 hours frame. There was no response.
Yesterday I wrote WordPress.com again, asking them to cancel my domain. I also pointed out, that I can not go on creating my website on another platform before the domain is cancelled (so I can register it somewhere else). This is interfering with my business. Now I wanted to contact WordPress again, but the contact support form is down again!!
Does anybody have any advice on how I can get through to wordpress on this matter? Or how else can I delete my domain and register it somewhere else? I am getting slightly desperate and would appreciate any advice! Thank you!!

Whatever you do, DON’T CANCEL THE DOMAIN.
You want to keep the domain and use it somewhere else, right? So if you cancel it, someone else could grab it. Don’t cancel it. Just cancel the mapping.
And yes, it’s extremely irritating that the advertised 24/7 suppport is 24/5 instead, but once again it is the weekend and you won’t be able to get through to them. There Is a forum for Staff Questions here, so try that.

Just update the name servers to your new host and you are good to go:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/
When domain is canceled there is no guarantee as to when the name will be released into the wild so you can try and buy it again – could be several weeks or somebody else could grab it and then you would be SOL

I’m sorry for the trouble!
If you still want to cancel the domain, please contact us via support@wordpress.com and mention “cancel” somewhere in the subject.
Also, please reference this support thread.

Thanks for the tips, I’ll look into that! Doesn’t it cost something to move your domain to another host? I really want to avoid additional costs!
The thing is, I don’t think anybody else in the world has my name and would suddenly try to buy the domain. Unless somebody seriously wanted to piss me off…

You can’t transfer a name within 60 days of registering it – that is an internet regulation to reduce fraud. Most registrars have no or minimal charges for transferring names – I don’t think WordPress.COM has any transfer fee if you leave so you can move your name to another registrar at some point in the future if you want.
Quickest and easiest if to just change the name-servers and you will be good to go (well it can take a few hours for the changes to migrate across the internet)

It doesn’t cost anything to move the name to a different host. And you probably won’t find it again for $5. I’ve registered lolebrity.net through WordPress and just changed where it pointed.
