Was unaware that ads propagate through the free subscription 5 mins after trying to setup temporary info page. This domain and web site is for a small non-profit self help group that cannot have ads propagating through it. We cannot afford $100/year for ads to be removed. Need to cancel subscription

You have to be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard, cancel an upgrades, claim a refund for any qualified upgrades, and disable auto-renew.
WordPress.com provides a 30-day refund on all upgrades except Domain Registrations, Domain Renewals, and Guided Transfers. The refund period for Domain Registrations and Renewals is 48 hours.
Note: It takes from 1 – 2 weeks for the refund to be received.
Provided you are logged in under the same username account that purchased the upgrade, and you are within the allowed time frame for refunds, you can cancel and request a refund from your dashboard > Store > My Upgrades. If you purchased your domain through wordpress.COM know that canceling it provides no guarantee that you will be able to register it again. Therefore, what’s best is to keep the domain URL so you can use it on another site. That is why I am tagging this thread with modlook for a Staff follow-up.
