Need to change email address

The directions say I can change the email in my account but I get a popup saying this method is not allowed. The account is setup with my work email I would like to set it up with my personal email.

How exactly are you trying to change your email?
You should be able to change it by adding a new email on the Account Setting page. That will send a confirmation email to the new address with a link you need to click to complete the change.
https://wordpress.com/me/account/Make sure the email you want to use is not already being used by another WordPress.com account, or it won’t work.

I click on my Avatar, I click on Account Settings in the menu on the left, I then click on and then I type the email address in the Email Address Field.
Now I get a new error. It says that email address is already being used. I do not have another WordPress Account.After getting the error, I did a search and found that link. It is exactly what I am doing that is why I posted.

I figured out why it’s saying it’s in use. I attempted to make another account and give access to that account. I now don’t know to delete the account. I did change the email for that account to see if that will work. I feel like this is getting worse than better.
