Need to change my URL from previously owned URL to free wordpress URL

I created a wordpress.com account through hostgator. I then added my hostgator purchased URL to settings, general, wordpress address URL spot and site address URL spot. I now cancelled my hostgator account and no longer own the URL I have in there and I am not sure what needs to happen so I can continue to use my wordpress account. What needs to go in the wordpress URL in place of the previously owned URL? I assume the site address URL just gets blanked out. I think that maybe the wordpress address URL never should have had my hosgator purchased URL in there. Please help me fix this.

It sounds like you’re talking about a self-hosted install, are you sure you’re in the right forum?

I realized after posting that I am not in the right forum. My old login works to get into admin of my site from my site but I can’t login for that forum for some reason. If I can’t convert the site, I’d like to just take it down and start over on the free hosting but can’t figure out how to do that. Thank you.

Ok, so your self-hosted site works correctly but you want to move it to wordpress.com? What I would do is export all content from your self-hosted install and import the file generated from there into your wordpress.com account.

You can’t log in to the Wp.com forum because you haven’t created an account there yet. Just do it.
