Need to Change Themes with Lots of Editing Required

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to change themes. But I have a LOT of editing to do first. For instance, the current theme has a black background, with white text. If I change to a white background, I have to change text color on a couple dozen pages or it will be invisible. I also have layout issues to deal with. So, how can I edit multiple pages over several days, get them all looking right in the new theme, not impact the current site, then switch everything to it all at once?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

This is why hand-coding font changes is not advised. There is no way to do this except to go through it all and delete the colour tags you’ve added to each post.

Layout issues are best dealt with after the transition. Since you seem to favour centering, issues there are minimal relative to the text.

Thanks for the input, most appreciated.

Is there a way to create a “test site” to experiment with colors, layouts, widgets, etc before switching the live site to the new theme? I think I may have just answered my own question. I have several contributing bloggers who post on my site but don’t actually use their own site. I can just use one of those sites to experiment with, right?

Create a new wordpress blog, probably with the same account that you use for your main blog. Set it to private and export/import the content from your main blog. You can now tinker with settings to see what it would look like without your main blog being changed. Make sure you set your test blog to private or the search engines will get angry (they don’t like duplicated content).

The only way to apply styles globally is to purchase the CSS upgrade and know a bit of CSS too. I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re comfortable with HTML and CSS in the first place but it isn’t too difficult to learn.
