Need to contact wp support – problem can't be solved otherwise
-
I’m a free user. I want to add a second blog, but the name (address) I want to use is already in use – essentially parked by wordpress with a “hello world” message. Without upgrading to paid service there’s no way to contact support… but it doesn’t inspire enough confidence in their support to pay if they can’t assign an otherwise-unused blog (subdomain) to me.
Perhaps someone there will read this and get back to me.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but abandoned blog addresses are not able to be reused. https://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-site-address/#reusing-other-site-addresses
This does not impact any future custom domain name you might purchase, but there is no way to get a subdomain unless the current owner transfers that to you.
-
I understand why that would be the case (respecting previous user’s content and all), but in this case there’s no content, so it was never actually used, so there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be available to someone now.
-
-
Much appreciated; if someone gets back to me we can get into the specifics i.e. which blog name this is about.
-
I’m sorry, but darciemg was correct earlier, we do not recycle site addresses under any circumstances: https://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-site-address/#reusing-other-site-addresses

Okay, so I give in and try to set up name2019.wordpress.com instead of the name.wordpress.com address I wanted. I punch that into the browser’s URL window. It says it doesn’t exist and asks if I want to register it. I say yes and confirm that I want a blog. But then it wedges at:
https://wordpress.com/start/domains-with-preview
as won’t let me proceed with the name it just told me is available. I don’t get it. This is not supposed to be this hard.
-
Specifically, what name did you just try to register?
Also, you can still skip the domain name recommendation and go with the original free choice.
-
I wanted wjyc.wordpress.com – that’s the zombie one that you won’t reallocate.
So I’m presently stuck on wjyc2019.wordpress.com
How, exactly, does one “skip the domain name recommendation”? If there were an obvious way to do so, I would have done so. But no such option is apparent.
-
Yep, that’s available.
See this annotated screenshot for what to do on the domains page: https://cld.wthms.co/x5vnOD
-
If that were what I’m seeing, I would award you three gold stars for not treating me like a moron. But it’s not. The first entry – and the free option – that the domains page is offering me is wjyc2019.home.blog .
It is not offering wjyc2019.wordpress.com
-
Sorry, I assumed by “I’m presently stuck on wjyc2019.wordpress.com” that’s what you had on that screen too.
wjyc2019.home.blogis also free. The primary domain suffixes (like .wordpress.com, .home.blog, and other .[category].blog options) are all free and offered based on selections you make earlier in the process.
So, you will see the same “Select” button to the right of “Free” for them.
Try putting “other” for your site’s topic to get offered a .wordpress.com option.
-
Nope, still not giving me the .wordpress.com option. I even switched to a different machine in case I was seeing stale cached nonsense.
-
Hm, “other” as a topic always gives me the .wordpress.com as the option, so does just random gibberish. We have to do that often ourselves to test things, and it has always worked for me, and it’s how I got to that point where I could take the earlier screenshot.
Sometimes “Technology” does too, but not always.
Sometimes it just means it’s not available.
wjyc2019.wordpress.comdefinitely is though. This is at the second step https://wordpress.com/start/site-topic-with-preview
Speaking of that though, it is possible you may be able to get
wjycunder some of the other.[category].blogoptions.Ultimately though, we can only offer what’s available.
-
Of course, but as you point out (and the reason I got to this point) the wordpress.com address is valid and available. I tried “other”, “technology”, and “blahblahblah” at the site-topic-with-preview step and .blog is all I get.
There’s gotta be another way to force it to give me the right answer. And I know that when I set up my existing blog I didn’t have to go through this gui-driven nonsense.
-
Back at step 1, try picking Professional instead of Blog. That usually does it for me to get a .wordpress.com address.
-
-
Man, this is a struggle.
One more question and I think I’ll have it settled. On my existing blog I’ve just been using the “classic” (?) editor rather than the block editor. The new one, though, is set to use the block editor, so this is clearly not a global setting. I’ve looked everywhere. How do I force the new blog to use the classic editor?
-
It’s the default for new sites since all of our newer themes are designed to work with it, but I’ve gone ahead and set it back to classic for you. Hoping that helps.
