Need to Create Retail Website w/o Complexity (Complete Newbie)

I am looking for guides, online or otherwise, on deeper web development. I want to start my wife’s retail jewelry website and purchase a Premium Theme, but when I tried this on your Elegant Themes site I found I was in way Over my head. I had no idea what I was doing half the time. I want to learn all about web development, the concepts, Apache, PHP, MySql etc. but for now I’m hoping just to start a nice Premium site without going through all the technical issues. If I choose a Premium Theme on wordpress.com, is it much simpler – installs (I already have the latest version of wordpress), directs me to a host, makes my site ready for building (which I am MUCH better at), and shows me how to make my site Live – without all the complexity of adding extensions, changing Permissions, Ports, MySql stuff etc., where I really don’t know what I’m doing? The documentation you provide for professional web admins is fine, but even it is too complex for me at this point. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Matt

I am not sure how much help I will be, but I can try explaining some of the things, from one newb to another.

In order to start a retail site, you will need the custom domain upgrade from WordPress.com, or you will need to do it the hard way. The hard way is as follows, from personal experience.

    1. I recommend using Name.com to find and purchase the domain name you wish to have. They offer a nice and easy check to see if it is available, and they will show you if anything is available extension wise (extension is the .com, the .org, the .me ect. ect.)

    2. I recommend using Host Gator for all your hosting needs. They are a great set of people to work with, and are usually very professional and prompt when you need them.

    3. I recommend getting yourself a web designer and having a pow wow to see what you will need technical wise, I love my wife and she is rather good with WordPress sites, and is usually eager to help someone do it themselves. I also suggest following this link: HERE You can contact my wife directly from that link as well.

    4. Locate and tweak the theme that you love, with guidance from the #3 that you can find. Then start the painstaking process of image uploading and filling.

The easy way is as follows:

    1. Locate a domain name that you are happy with and has the extra extension that you would be upgrading it to. (Cancels step 1 above)

    2. Purchase the upgrade and allow WordPress to handle the hosting for you. (Cancels step 2 above)

    3. Same as step 3 above, if you can find one willing to explain the technical stuff and what you should do.

    4. Same as step 4 above, as it is building the actual site.

Either way, it’s a lot easier than it looks. Especially with WordPress being the software that it is. The hardest part is the domain name in my opinion, so once you get past that hurdle you should be on the gravy train. Good luck and we’re here if you need us.

Thanks for your reply. I’m already using Elegant Themes, but Gator Host is my hosting service and they are great. I guess I have to accept the fact that learning this whole thing is going to be a time-consuming, trial by error process, but that it is rewarding in the end. When I’m not stuck it is actually very enjoyable! Cheers!

That’s NOT a free hosted WordPress.COM blog you are referring to then and we do not provide support for it here. You are posting to the wrong support forum.

WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate, have different log-ins and run different versions of themes with same names. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

We provide support only for free hosted WordPress.COM blogs and not for WordPress.org software installs. If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.

Wow, I’m surprised that isn’t violating some sort of trademark law on .org’s part. Very confusing, and it explains why my password keeps not working. Why did my Elegant Themes application upload to wordpress.com. This is an insane arrangement and will cause the both of you to lose customers.

Why did my Elegant Themes application upload to wordpress.com

Simple – you did not upload to WordPress.COM – you can’t upload themes to .COM

I’m surprised that isn’t violating some sort of trademark law on .org’s part.

I don’t see the issue, WordPress.COM & WordPress.ORG are both part of Automattic

This is an insane arrangement and will cause the both of you to lose customers.

Insane or not Automattic is growing at a rapid pace and WordPress software powers about 20% of the new web sites in the world – – so they must be doing something right.
