Need to customize teh template

  Hi Guys,

  I have my blog hosted on my private web space. I need to customize the template of the page to suit to my purpose. WordPress does not provide me an option to customize my template. Ofcourse I could buy an upgrade and edit my CSS but that is not sufficient to change the look of the template.
  What do I do to change the template? How do I do it?
