Need to delete account

Help – I spelled the name wrong for the account. Need to delete and reapply. How do I do this??

You did not specify a blog address or reason for posting when you created this topic.
This support forum is for WordPress.com hosted blogs only. If you have a self-hosted WordPress blog you need to seek help at the WordPress.org forums, not here.
If you don’t understand the difference, you may find this information helpful.

Accounts cannot be deleted: http://support.wordpress.com/deleting-accounts/ .
Blogs can however: http://support.wordpress.com/settings/delete-blog/ .
All you need to do is log out of wordpress, go to the main wordpress page http://wordpress.com/ and create the new account with the proper spelling.
As for the old account, just ignore it.

Is the situation likely to change eventually? I see from the page you gave that accounts are peramanent because of potential “software issues”, suggesting that one day the software might be improved, and I’m not convinced that “there is no security risk” can ever be 100% guaranteed where the Internet is concerned.
Not that I have a blog to delete, but I may do in the future.

No one knows.
The thing is that accounts anywhere are virtually never deleted (even if you think they have been). They may be “closed” or made inactive, but seldom deleted.
This is always the case with any account where money has changed hands. If you buy a domain upgrade here, or the CSS upgrade or any other upgrade, then they CANNOT delete your account because that would delete that monetary transaction, and that would screw up their accounting and open them up to all sorts of legal/accounting/tax issues.

Ah I see. And even if the details were automatically copied to another database or something, that would be like changing the original account.
Thanks!

FYI: As final as it might sound — “Deactivate Account” — Facebook doesn’t delete your account either. WordPress does a much better job explaining what’s about to happen / not happen when you’re on their “Delete Blog” page.

Facebook DOES delete your account. I speak from experience. What it doesn’t do is delete your shared files.

“An overarching concern was that, although Facebook provides information about its privacy practices, it is often confusing or incomplete. For example, the “account settings” page describes how to deactivate accounts, but not how to delete them, which actually removes personal data from Facebook’s servers.”

http://www.priv.gc.ca/media/nr-c/2009/nr-c_090716_e.cfmI think, when Facebook finds an account someone’s using to further their plans for global domination, they zap it. But when us regular folk try to x-out our accounts because we’re sick of the layout flaws and the barrage of spam apps, we don’t delete them, we deactivate them. Facebook, when we use their controls, won’t let us delete an account.
It feels like you’ve been away somewhere…
