need to have my blog on a new custom domain name
-
I’ve emailed before and did not receive a response. I have a custom registered domain name. I want to change it to a new registered domain name and make sure all my prior content will be on the new domain name. How do I do this? I wasn’t able to find anything helpful on the support page and want to make sure I’m setting it up correctly. Do I need the 2nd domain page first and then somehow point all my content to it? Do I have to transfer content to it? I don’t want to continue with 2 registered domain names once the 2nd is up and running. Thanks!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
This is for your site girlnorthandtheboys.com? What is the domain name you want to change it to? Who is the domain registered with? With that info, I can help you out. :)

To be 100% sure that no traffic is lost, in addition to the change to the site URL above, you will also need a Site Redirect upgrade, which will catch all of your traffic from the old url and send it to the new URL.
You can purchase this by going to the Store tab in your site dashboard, and selecting the Site Redirect upgrade.
Thanks!

Thanks Jerry –
My old url was girlnorthandtheboys.com and the new one is beanandpeanut.com. I believe both are registered through wordpress. I’d like to continue using wordpress for the beanandpeanut site so is the site redirect still necessary? it seemed to be for leaving wordpress.
Thanks! -
Thanks for clarifying. Yes, I can see both of those active on your account, and it looks as if you have already made beanandpeanut.com your primary domain, which is a fancy way of saying that your site is now at that address.
You can confirm this by going to Store>My Domains in your site’s admin dashboard.

If you are staying at WordPress.com then a redirect is not necessary. You can test this out now by going to http://girlnorthandtheboys.com/ which you will see is automatically redirects to http://beanandpeanut.com/
However, if you are planning on leaving WordPress.com (for a self-hosted WordPress (also called “.org”) site or other blogging platform) then yes, a redirect upgrade is recommended. For most situations you only need it for a year (so everyone gets the hint) and then you can let it and your old domain expire.
Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions.
