Need to merge accounts

I attempted to change our main account ((email visible only to moderators and staff)) to (email visible only to moderators and staff) but the system said the email address (accounts@) is already in use. I attempted to log in with a forgotten password for accounts@ and the system said I needed to activate the account. I activated and proceeded to close the accounts@ user account to ensure it’s not in use, but the accounts@ address will be tied up in the system for 30 days. Please help!
