Need to REGISTER new domain name servers for domain purchased through wordpress
-
I need to register new domain name servers for a domain I purchased through wordpress.com. I can see where to specify nameservers, but I am in the process of moving my blog to a VPS and need to *register* new ones, providing IP addresses for them. Can you help?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There is no permanent static IP address for any WordPress.com blog. All IPs are dynamic ie. ever changing. Therefore WordPress.com does not provide static IP addresses.

eythink: If I understand correctly, you’re trying to point your domain registered through WordPress.com to another server.
Based on what your host is asking for, you’ll probably need to add a Custom DNS record (see the following article). Your host should be able to provide you with the records that needed to be added.

Thanks, timethief. However, I’m actually not using a wordpress.com blog. I’m hosting a wordpress.org install on my own hosting service. But the domain name that points to it was originally purchased THROUGH wordpress.com, when another member of my team initially set up the site as a wordpress.com blog. I was able to go in to settings and change the nameservers to point at my hosted wp.org blog, BUT I’m upgrading to a VPS server and therefore need to change the nameservers again. But this time, because it’s a VPS host, the nameservers need to be registered anew.

You should also be able to point your domain your host’s nameservers, and they can handle the DNS:

Thanks andrewcpht. I *think* (but could be wrong) that the first article, “Custom DNS record,” is addressing almost the opposite situation: if I owned a domain elsewhere, but then wanted to point it to my wp.com blog.
Then the second article is actually really close to what I’m trying to do. In fact, it’s what I am doing now — pointing the DNS to my current host. But when I upgraded to a VPS host, it needs to point at ns1.myurlthatiboughtthroughwordpress.com and ns2.myurlthatiboughtthroughwordpress.com … which don’t currently exist. My understanding is that I would typically request the registrar create these nameservers for me, using IP #s that my host company provided. HOWEVER, this is wordpress.com and it doesn’t seem to work that way here? So then, I dunno what to do next. :P

Also FYI the domain is fewer than 60 days old — otherwise I’d just transfer it to make life a little easier.

Your web host should be able to provide you with nameservers that you can use. You don’t need to register nameservers with your domain.

If you’ve registered your domain through WordPress.com and now want it to point to a blog or website hosted elsewhere then you can do this by updating the nameservers.

@andrewcpht
Thanks for the help here. Note I tagged the thread for a Staff follow-up too. -
I’m using GreenGeeks. I already have updated the nameservers once, which worked, but like I said, I’m being told (by gg) that I need to have my registrar create these new ones (and maybe my guy there is telling me wrong, I dunno) and I don’t see a way to do THAT. I know this is convoluted, but do you get me?
-
I do get you and I did tag this thread for Staff attention when I first posted above. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.
-
Gotcha. Thanks — I hope my tone came across as “casual/conversational” and not frustrated. Because if I am, it’s definitely not with you guys! Thanks again.
-
I didn’t find your tone to be anything other than civil. lol :D
ADVICE: Hang in there and stop posting here as it’s moving the timestamp forward on this thread. Staff work their way through support tickets and forum threads tagged for their attention by dealing with those that have the earliest date and timestamps first, then moving forward to deal with those that have the most recent date and time stamps. Please be patient while waiting for Staff to assist the bloggers who posted before you did.

Howdy folks,
The service that we use for domain management refers to this as “hostnames” in the domain management tool.
Login to your Domain Manager (instructions: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-management/ ) and click on your domain name. Under Settings, you’ll see “Host names”. Click Manage, then “Add One” for each of the (likely) two nameserver entries you’ll need to add.
Please let me know if you have any questions and thanks for your patience! Thanks timethief, as always, and andrewcpht for your help.

kraftbj THANK YOU. I can’t believe it was under my nose all along!
andrewcpht & timethief — thank you both for your advice, and timethief also for tagging this for staff followup.
