Need to remove a Contributor (ex-staff) but keep old posts in Contributor's name

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to remove a Contributor’s rights to write new posts but want to keep old posts written by the Contributor on the blog under the Contributor’s name. If I remove the Contributor from ‘users’ will all the Contributor’s posts be removed too? How do I get around this issue?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. As far as I know removing a user will not remove their posts as well. I tested it by adding my secondary account as a user on my test blog, created a post using the secondary account, and then removed it as user again. The test post remained on the blog. Perhaps create an export file of that user’s posts before you remove the user, just to have a backup if something goes wrong.

Many thanks indeed. Appreciate that you tested it out yourself and added the link – very kind of you.

  • You are very welcome :)

    Happy blogging.

I can’t find the link – but the content should stay – but I think you need to assign the Posts to another author if they are removed – so you might need to create a new fake user account or have the departing person transfer the account to another person by changing the email address to someone else – but if the person has used that account in other places on the internet they might not want to do that since you can now impersonate the person leaving

When I tested it, albeit with a single post, the posts remained in place along with the author archive, and there was no option to assign a different author as happens with imports. The author name on posts only seems to link internally to the author archive for the specific blog, not to the author’s account/primary blog unlike comments.

Interesting – thanks – I was sure I saw the need to assign to another author – your update makes things much easier

    thanks
