Need To Rename A File

  We have a PDF uploaded via the media library that stopped working, after the URL was published. In an attempt to force a new version of the file, we re-uploaded it but now WordPress is adding a number to the file name (“myfilename2.pdf” instead of “myfilename.pdf”).

  Permanently deleting the file and re-uploading doesn’t work as WP keeps adding numbers to the file name. Is there anyway to force WP to use the original filename so that URL works properly? Thanks.

  I never send out a link to a file – I upload the file into a Post or Page – then I send a link to the Pager or Post –

  if I update a file – I change the file name and upload the new file and change the links in the existing Post or Page – then I send a note if required to those that use the file

  Your other option is to use a file sharing service that lets a file be updated without changing the file name then link to the file on the file sharing service
