Need to Start Again
-
Hi, I am totally confused with this theme and have followed the instructions to create a home page but this now has the url /home-6/ and I cannot change it. I really need to get on with getting this blog up and running.
Can you please tell me how to delete everything and start again with this theme as this is my quickest option.
I have copied my blog text so that is not a problem and my images are saved elsewhere as well.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You do not need to start over. You’ve made a huge start to begin with.
You have many choices with WordPress configurations. You may have a static front (home) page or feature your latest posts on the front page, or a combination of both.
The “home-6” Page is due to the fact that you created 6 Pages called “home” and the database set them to be unique by adding a number. You found this by setting your front page to be static and set to home.
It looks like you have removed the static front page, so “home-6” isn’t an issue unless you wish to restore it.
To change the home-6, and this is a maybe as it is a database issue and we can’t change that, ensure that all “home” pages are deleted save the last one you created (or the first one if it still exists).
1. Edit the remaining “home” Page
2. Look for the URL under the title in the CLASSIC interface (it’s buried under Settings or Options on the new interface if you are using it).
3. Click EDIT
4. Change the “page slug” as it is called to home.IF the database takes it, it should switch to “home” and not home-6 or whatever the number is.
Again, your site looks lovely as it is without a static front page and the home page. Consider leaving it in that form to save you the stress.
As for the Theme, without knowing what specifically you are confused about, we can’t help much. Please create a new post with specific questions regarding that Theme.
If you wish to increase your stress, you may export the content (Tools > Export) and import it into another WordPress.com site with a new address. Do this first before deleting the old. Once complete, the import will bring in the images and all the content, you may select the Theme, and continue to customize the site. Then you may delete the old site when you are sure you’re ready.
Also, I note that you have a category called “blog.” Blog is a website not a topic, unless you are writing about blogging and then the category would be “Blogging” not “Blog.” I know there is much confusion about this, and you are welcome to leave it. Just thought you might like to help your readers find your more relevant information grouped together appropriately.
Thanks and hope this helps.

Sorry – I have spent another couple of hours on this and may just need to know how to change the home page’s url from /home-6/ as I need this page to be the default page when people arrive at the site.
Can you let me know both how to change the url and also how to start again. Many thanks

I’ve given you instructions on how to change the “home” page as a static front page to “home” and not “home-6” above, as well as how to start again. Please read the instructions above carefully.

I have tried changing the slug /home-6 to just /home but this is greyed out and will not let me change it [this would have solved my problem]. Any more ideas how I can make this page my default page [it doesn’t need to be called home] just as long as visitors to this site arrive at this page.
Also you mention the category I have called “blog”. I just noticed that other sites have a category / page called blog, but can I delete this without causing any problems? Don’t really need it there – I just thought I had to have either a page or category called ‘blog’.

If it is greyed out, it means you are not logged in as Administrator. It should be editable, published or not.
You may create a Page called front, default, this-one, or whatever you wish. Then:
1. Go to Settings > Reading
2. Set the Front Page Displays as A STATIC PAGE
3. Set the front page as [whatever]
4. Set the posts page as Blog or whatever you decide to put your posts on.
5. Save and Update the screen at the bottom.
6. Go to Appearance > Menus
7. Choose the primary menu and customize it to feature the following (per web standards though you can do whatever you wish):
A. Home (front page) (you may rename it to Home there as it will appear in the menu)
B. Blog
C. About
D. Whatever you wish (resources, events, other Pages)
E. Policies
F. Contact
8. Save this and ensure it is set as your primary menu
9. Check the front view of your site to ensure it looks they way you wish. If not, go back and edit and fix. This will set your front page to whatever you wish and create a main navigation to direct people to the various parts and pieces.
A Page called Blog displays your posts if you have set up a static front page. A category called “blog” displays posts associated with blog topics and only posts in that category. You can delete the category without impacting the Page as they are completely unrelated.

Many thanks Lorelle – you are a complete star! Everything is now sorted out and people are directed to the home page by default and /home-6 has gone. Thanks for your help.
