Need to take over a site
-
Someone created a website on wordpress.com for our high school gradnite “cpgradnite.com” No one knows who is associated with this site. No email or login and pw information. How can we take this site over so we can use it for next year. It is a case of too many chiefs and not enough Indians! I know how to use wordpress but not how to get into an abandoned site.

Hi there,
Someone created a website on wordpress.com for our high school gradnite “cpgradnite.com” No one knows who is associated with this site. No email or login and pw information. Due to security reasons, it’s very difficult to access a WordPress.com account without email/login/password. You need either of the information but I will still add modlook tag for staff attention as they might be of some help to you. By the time, please consider visiting the following support pages.

Hi there,
All I can tell you is that that site belongs to the username, cpgradnite. For security reasons we cannot provide any other information beyond that, and we can only give you access to the account if you’re able to verify your ownership via the account recovery form linked to above.

This is what we have found. There was a website built using Homestead. Someone apparently did not like it and built a site using wordpress.com. They then went into Homestead where the first site was built and changed the Name Servers to Ns1.wordpress.com…etc.
The cpgradnite.com then showed up on wordpress.com
We have now just tried changing the name servers to ns1.mdnsservice.com …
Not sure if this will work as the registra for the domain shows it owned by wordpress.comAny ideas?

We aren’t able to assist any further until we hear from the cpgradnite user account. I’ve sent a note their way with a link to this thread.

I would like to know who they are too. The email is very general. So far after changing the nameservers to the homestead ones nothing shows up when accessing the website in a browser. Either we are waiting for the propagation or it is wrong.
tks

OK apparently these owners purchased the domain from wordpress and then built the site. There is also a website at homestead that we CAN get to and that is the one that I pointed the domain nameservers to.
It just came up http://cpgradnite.com
It is beyond ugly but since we can not get into the wordpress version this one will have todo. I build wordpress sites and now can at least use homestead and change the theme to create a better-looking site.
I do not want to have to create a totally new site. I could using my bluehost server and then move it all but I am doing this gratis for the high school. -
The only thing that would be nice is to transfer the domain to a registrar that we can access in the future. Without the access info that might be impossible.
Can you see who the owner of the domain is besides just WordPress? -
Well the homestead site is messed up. How can we get the domain that was purchased through wordpress..com pointing to the wordpress.com site? http://cpgradnite.com
-
I guess worst case is I will build a new site using wordpress on my bluehost server and then just cut and paste content.
Just want to get out of this mess. So weird that the domain cpgradnite.com which was purchased from wordpress.com has the name server tool on homestead where I can point the domain to the wordpress name servers.
Once I build a new site I will have to go back to homestead and change the name servers to point to bluehost.
So weird that round about. -
Howdy,
Public records show that the domain is actually registered at Tucows and not here at WordPress.com. This may explain why you are able to edit the domain’s name servers over at Homestead, especially if HomeStead is using Tucows as a domain reseller. You may view the public records for the domain here:
https://whois.icann.org/en/lookup?name=cpgradnite.comI can confirm that the domain is currently pointing to our name servers which is why you’re seeing a WordPress.com site when visiting the domain.
Unfortunately, re-building the site either at WordPress.com or over at another host such as Bluehost may be the best option if you are unsure who in the organization originally set things up. As mentioned, we have messaged the original owner with a link to this thread hopefully, they are able to get in touch with you soon.
