Need to unlock WordPress domain
-
I purchased a domain from another registrar, but I can’t use it because it turns out, the domain is owned by WordPress. How do I get the authorization code from WordPress so I can use the domain?
WP.com: Yes
Jetpack: No
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
What is the domain URL? I do not see any custom domain connected to the account you are contacting us from. Once I receive the domain URL, I’d be happy to point you in the right direction for support.
Thanks! -
The domains I purchased are woodstockforsale.com and woodstockforsale.net. The purchase could never be confirmed because I didn’t have the authorize code. I have a copy of the receipt if needed. Thank you for your help!

Hi there,
I found woodstockforsale.com, but the domain is under a different WordPress.com account than the one you are reaching out from. Can you log into the other account and then post in this thread to confirm ownership? Then we’ll look further into this transfer for you.
Also, woodstockforsale.net is not hosted with us here; Whois saying that it is with Domain Jamboree:

I don’t think you’re understanding the problem. I was unable to purchase those domains because WordPress needs to give me the authorization code in order to purchase it. Of course I don’t have that domain under a WordPress account because I can’t buy it without the authorization code. I feel like I’m talking in circles. I paid $380 for both domains and I can’t use either of them because I need the code.

The main domain I need your help with is woodstockforsale.com. https://whois.domaintools.com/woodstockforsale.com

Hi there,
I paid $380 for both domains and I can’t use either of them because I need the code.
I do not see any upgrades under your @angiehays account when I check on our end. You can confirm by visiting this page: https://wordpress.com/me/purchases/
Is it possible you made your purchase under a different login?
I can confirm that woodstockforsale.com is registered at WordPress.com but is under a different account and not your @angiehays login. If you do not recall how to log in to your other account you can fill out the form here to get assistance from our Account Recovery team: https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=recovery
On that form you will be asked to provide a transaction ID for your purchase, which you can typically find on your credit card statement. More info on how to find that here: https://wordpress.com/support/billing-history/#retrieving-a-transaction-id
Once you are connected to the correct account we are happy to help you with managing your domain purchases. Thanks!

We are getting nowhere if I can’t send you my receipt to look at. I DID NOT purchase the domain from WordPress and there’s no way for me to use it under any account until I get the authorization code to complete the purchase. I’m sorry that I’m not aware of the protocol to follow to purchase a domain. Obviously, I should’ve come directly to WordPress, but I didn’t know that at the time I paid my money. How can I send you the email receipt I got when I paid the money to purchase these domains?

I purchased the domains through IDNS (Internet Domain Name Service), which is the company someone else told me to use. The order number is 379135 on January 13, 2022. Thank you for your help!

Hi there!
Thanks for the additional context!
I DID NOT purchase the domain from WordPress and there’s no way for me to use it under any account until I get the authorization code to complete the purchase.
This might be correct for woodstockforsale.net, but the other domain woodstockforsale.com is currently registered with us at WordPress.com. It’s not registered elsewhere. In fact, this domain has been registered with us at WordPress.com for many years. (It’s on a different WordPress.com account, as we previously mentioned, but it’s not with another provider.)
Could you contact IDNS to get clarification on what exactly you paid them for? I suspect you may have paid for hosting and added the domain as something you want to use. woodstockforsale.com couldn’t have been registered with them because it’s been registered with us for many years.
Obviously, IDNS is a different company, so we have no insights into what you purchased with them. But we can say for sure that it isn’t a domain registration for woodstockforsale.com. If you visit the site at https://woodstockforsale.com, you’ll see it even loads a WordPress.com site.
To take a step back and help me understand the bigger picture, can you tell me exactly what you wanted to do? Did you want to create a new site with the domain woodstockforsale.com?
Note that all of the above is about the domain woodstockforsale.com. The other domain you mentioned, woodstockforsale.net, is currently registered elsewhere, as you can see in this WHOIS lookup.

May we please just focus on woodstockforsale.com. It used too belong to my brother in law. Once he had no use for the site, he said I could take it over. I have no way of showing you the receipt showing that I paid $, but what it states on the invoice that I Purchased from them “Domain Transfer and Renewal for woodstockforsale.com”. Forgive my ignorance, but if this was a company who mislead me, I will have to dispute the charge of over a year ago and pray I get my money back. Please advise.

I just received an email from IDNS and they have agreed to refund $190 for woodstockforsale.com. I would like to purchase that domain. How do I go about doing that?
-
Hi there,
Okay, there is definitely some confusion regarding woodstockforsale.com. There is no need to purchase registration for woodstockforsale.com because registration was already renewed 77 days ago. In fact, the domain has been owned and registered since 2012 (even though the site has not appeared to have been updated since 2012).
However, as we mentioned, it is connected to a different WordPress.com account than the one you are contacting from. I am unsure what the $190 refund was for, but it was not for the domain registration. It must have been for site hosting, but the domain has been connected to woodstockforsale.wordpress.com and hosted with us since 2012. IDNS has never had the rights to the domain, so they can’t provide you with ownership of it and shouldn’t have been charging you for it. If that is the case, they definitely misled you, and I am happy to hear you received your money back.
Therefore, to further manage the site and domain, you’ll need to log out of angiehays and log into the WorcPres.com account associated with the site. I take it the account that the site and domain are currently under belongs to your brother-in-law since he managed them before you. I would contact him and see if he remembers the login credentials for his WordPress.com account. If he can log in and confirm ownership, have him post in this thread, and we can then assist you with moving the site and domain over to your account, assuming that is what you want to do.
Hope this helps clarify things. Let us know if you have any additional questions.

Thank you so much! I will reach out to him and see what’s going on. I really appreciate your patience with me!
