Need to use the old writing/editing system

  • Unknown's avatar

The new writing/editing system is a nightmare — it took me three times longer than the old system would have, with a great deal of difficult, unnecessary work because everything has been made cumbersome. How do I get the old system back? I write my posts elsewhere and then paste them in to format, so this change works very badly for me. I have attempted to look over WordPress’ instructions but they are written in a most unhelpful manner.

    Just use the classic block.

  • Unknown's avatar

As I already stated, the instructions to use “classic block” are too unclear to be of any use.

  • Unknown's avatar

What do you need to know about using it? It is the same as the classic editor, which you find in the administrative area.

I also hate the latest changes and dont know how to revert back to the former editor. Was I using Bakery, I dont know ! Perhaps. Maybe I need to pay for Bakery now? Not sure. Would that solve my problems? I dont know. Never had to pay for it before. Been using WordPress for a few years now so have invested a lot of time but now it seems to have all fallen apart. I think the developers felt they were making it too easy for us and felt unwanted. So they tweak a few things and get lots of complaints so they feel wanted again.

  • @systemicdisorder I’m not sure I understand your issue. Can you tell me a bit more about what you are trying to set up?

The toolbar in the classic block mirrors the options you had within the classic editor, to add images, text, formatting, etc, so you can place your familiar tools inside of the newer block editor. Is there something specific you were able to accomplish in the classic editor that you are not able to do within the classic block?

Happy to take a closer look, thanks.

I just paid someone to log in and restore the classic editor which for some reason went missing. Now I have it back, but not exactly as it was. Now when I log in I don’t get the classic editor view by default, I need to click back end editor to get there which is a little annoying.

@ jerrysarcastic. Thanks for the response. I don’t understand how to even find the classic editor or how to return to it. As I already wrote, the instructions in the help section are written in a way that can’t be understood.

The issue is that nothing in the new system works as well. I was eventually able to do the formatting I ordinarily do — insert pictures, block quotes, bulleted lists — but it took 3 times longer than it did with the old system. The new system is far more complicated, is not user-friendly as was the old system and is badly cluttered with many useless items.

One issue is that the bullet feature doesn’t work — I had to manually re-input each item in two bulleted sections by hand. That is something that needs to be fixed.

Bottom line, I need clear instructions on how to get classic editor back.

This is a fine example of something that worked very well and should not have been “fixed.” Unfortunately, this is an all too common experience in technology. BTW, I’ve using computers since 1978, long before there was any such thing as “user friendly,” so I am not a case of a techno-phobe by any means. If somebody like me is having trouble with it, many others must be as well.

WP has done this before and walked it back, at least after much agitation left us the option to stay with the old look and feel and function.

Here we go again, changing things that don’t need changing? What a waste of everybody’s time. Though I can appreciate the work that has gone into it and for some it will work just fine, for others it’s a bloody nightmare.

After stumbling into ‘Blocks’ (I think I hit ADD BLOCK, top left?), another 15 minutes and I just stumbled back into Classic Editor. Not sure if I can duplicate that and reluctant to spend precious time on it now.

What is ‘Convert to blocks’? Just another complicated form of editing?

I am not doing a post today but I suspect there will be more issues with this.

    * One issue so far is the Preview opens a drop box with more options. Time wasted.

Can we have a Preview option that just opens in a new tab with One Click?

    * Another issue is with Categories. I no longer have the ‘Most Used’ option and now it appears I have to go looking through a long list for the Categories I often use. More time wasted.

Can we have the Most Used Categories option back please? I would also like to be able to delete categories I no longer want or need, is that possible?

    * There’ll be more I’m sure … I see no option to schedule a post, but that’s on an already published post. On an unpublished Page all I see is the option to publish Immediately. I’m afraid to test it in case it does what it says and publishes an unfinished Page.

Can we have the Post/Page Schedule option back please? If in fact it’s not just hidden somewhere.

    * More … ? :-) Coming up no doubt … All the options to be found on the edit page now seem so unnecessary and cluttered it is unlikely I will ever dive into them except when something gets broken. I trust that time never comes, the time it would take …

Ditto @systemicdisorder sentiments. I have been ‘doing’ computers since my industrial DOS/IBM days back in the 70’s, if somewhat reluctantly these days where people seem to have the need to change things for the sake of change.

Ok, I like those old manual engines I can pull apart in my garage, and put back together and they run again, even if there’s left over pieces. :-)

Anyway, I trust it all works out, for everyone.

Can anyone tell me how to start a New Post with this new look/editor/…?

Can’t find the option any more and am scheduled to write a new post today.

    * Found it, Click on big black square with big W, top left corner – Block Editor Sidebar it says – drops down and +Add New Post is down the bottom of drop box.

Can the + Add New Post be located at top of drop box. Saves time again, for me, as it’s probably all I will use the box for.

    * And yes, as above …

“I need clear instructions on how to get classic editor back.” And some explanation of the rest of it, in simple English if possible.

@onbeing mark: You can schedule a post but as you correctly guessed, it’s hidden. I found it by much searching as I was also needing to schedule rather than publish immediately.

Click on “settings,” the gear-looking icon at top right. When you do so, on the first line there is a choice of “post” and “block.” Click on post. When you do that, the first line that appears is “status & visibility.” Click on that. The second line you now see is “publish” and “publish” is defaulted to “immediately.” Click on immediately. At that point, finally, a pop-up set of fields and a calendar allow to you to schedule.

Many more steps, and hidden away. Just one of so many things that has been made unnecessarily complicated.

Thanks @systemicdisorder I’ll get to that. But this is a disaster, nothing is simple or easy.

Currently trying to figure out how to upload images. Now only available to upload one at a time it seems (I do multiple, photography is integral) and when I get a few up it’s another effort to get some text/link in between two of them, then I can’ actually edit the images for what I want, another grand waste of time.

Classic editor has gone walkabouts again. Has it been turned off? Where do I find Classic Editor? Found it in Add Block, which I do and it disappears again before I can use it, my formatting gets disturbed and can’t edit it back.

Whoever designed this doesn’t use it is my guess, and didn’t do their Beta testing properly.

Come on guys, some response here? Bring back what works for **** sake.

@radtrad staff-totoro is there no admin monitoring this forum?

Dumping this major poorly tested change on us without notice or clear instruction. Is this how paying members are treated here nowadays? Has me looking for an alternative already..

  • Unknown's avatar

Sent email to support, see if anyone responds. Wondering why there isn’t a tsunami of complaints about this? Maybe there is, we’re just not seeing them?

  • Unknown's avatar

Can’t edit my images or text, Classic editor unusable.

Apparently Preview doesn’t work on unpublished posts – can’t see the point of previewing after posting.

It looks like my only option now is to publish and take a chance all is well. And maybe I’ll be able to edit later. I don’t have the time for this now.

This imposition of sudden massive change is coercive behaviour on someone’s part, very unprofessional, and decidedly disrespectful of long paying members.

  • You can still switch to the classic editor when writing/editing posts/pages in your site’s Dashboard: https://wordpress.com/support/dashboard/

With that said, we do recommend the new editor though, and we have tips for transitioning from the classic editor to blocks https://wordpress.com/support/switching-from-the-classic-to-the-block-editor/ and FAQs: https://wordpress.com/support/replacing-the-older-wordpress-com-editor-with-the-wordpress-block-editor/#frequently-asked-questions

And, if you really want to use something like the classic editor, we recommend sticking with the classic block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/

We also have some extensive documentation available at https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/

So how do I get back Classic Editor?

  • Unknown's avatar

    And use it on images?

  • Hi folks, if you must you can use /wp-admin/ to edit your posts if needed.

I’d recommend getting to know the classic editor though.

You can type bulleted lists by typing this:

    – one
    – two
    – three

You can add an image by pressing the plus sign or typing
/image and then dragging and dropping.

Or you can copy and paste an image.

    @onbeingmark
you mentioned you are not able to preview. This sounds like a bug. Would you be willing to start a new thread, and also upload what you are seeing to https://wordpress.com/media so we can see what you see?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ll get around to that Preview issue but little time at present.
