Needing help with categories/widgets…

  • Unknown's avatar

I named and added several category widgets onto my sidebar, and now I am trying to add the categories…Only one category that I add (the first one) shows up for all of the category widgets. I can add several categories on the “categories page” on my dashboard, but when I go to the front page, the first category I have added shows up for all the category widgets.

Ive tried two different themes and this doesn’t appear to be the problem…

I really dont know how to explain it any better, but if you understand this please help me out.

    Thanks!

Categories only show up once you’ve used them in a post.

okay, so I wrote two posts and this is what happened:

The first showed up under all of the widgets on my sidebar under what category I posted it in, which I thought to be normal.

Then, I wrote another and used a new category… and it too showed up under every widget category I have. I dont know how to keep the individual categories seperate, and how to keep them with their perspective widget categories… any ideas?

Could you be more specific? Please provide direct links to each post, and tell us which categories you added it in.

The name of the Categories widget should be Categories, Index or whatever, and it displays all the categories assigned to published posts. You don’t use it more than once.

You are over thinking and overdoing, so to speak. You do not understand how categories operate and seem to think you need to contsruct them when in fact the software does this.

Pages cannot have categroies assigned to them – only posts can be categorized. We create posts, assign categories to them and publish them. The software automatically displays the published posts on our Front page of the blog, on Categories page and in the Categories widget, and on the Archives and Archives widget. Note that there must be at least one published post in any Category for the Categories widget to display a link to the post. Recap: we assign Categories to posts and publish them — the software takes care of the rest.
