Negative comments left
-
I am new to blogging. My blog is stirring up negative comments from people, I knew when I started the blog it might and it is. Brother who is a big blogger says its great, that means people are reading and its causing them to think. With all that said I don’t know how to reply to the comments when I am pretty much being told to stick it. Could someone offer a little help on what they do with unpleasant feedback? Just delete and ignore? I just don’t know how much more I can take! thanks……..toni
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

What you might want to do is come up with a comments policy and put it on a page on your blog letting people know what is acceptable and what is not. The bottom line is that it is YOUR blog and it is your right to decide what you deem acceptable or not. Spirited discussion is one thing, but flame wars are quite another, if that is not what you intended.
One step I suggest with controversial blogs is to go to settings > discussion and check “An administrator must always approve the comment” under “Before a comment appears” so that you have to moderate and approve comments before they post.
If you click on my username it will take you to my blog and there, click on the “Legal” tab in the top navigation and there is a section on “comments policy” that you can use as a starting point if you wish.
Also, there is a good article on comments policies on the BlogHerald: http://www.blogherald.com/2007/09/04/does-your-blog-have-a-comments-policy/

If it’s thoughtful criticism, you always have the option of replying to the comment publibly and clarifying your post, but if it’s just ranting, I would just delete it and move on. There’s also the option of moderating the comments, so they don’t appear publicly on the blog until you approve them.
Good luck!

First time comments I can moderate, at least I did that right. the comments are more or less “If you dont like it then go home” or “You must be paying people to leave the comments because all you do is complain”. I agree with you both about criticism, all I wanted to do was write about my experience living in another country~apparently writing about that tends to piss off the people that live in that country. I have deleted and then they continue to write asking why I dont reply.
I do like youre “Legal” tab at the top I would very much like to use that in my blog, thank you for the offer!!

You’re very welcome. It was a combination of information from several sources including the blog herald post that I provided the link to.

I have several “stalkers” that consistently try to leave very rude and nasty comments on my blog – I found that by editing them to sing my praises, they stop trying to post nasty ones! I’m so sneaky…

My blog is about a controversial topic. Like one of the other commenters here, I too have a widget that links to my comment policy. But disruptive visitors don’t pay attention to such things. They just show up to rant. I know the type all too well. I’ve been at this a long time (but less than a year at WordPress) and I have no tolerance for disruptive behavior. There’s a big difference between disagreements — which are fine — and forum disruptions. Some bloggers like flame fests and the action they generate, but I don’t want that kind of traffic. I’m quick to ban, because I know trouble when it appears. In extreme cases I’ll mark the comment as spam. The bottom line is that it’s your blog and it’s up to you how you run it.
