Net Neutrality

To preserve net neutrality, how about WordPress.com joining the other fine websites working to protect the net from now through December 12?

There’s a new effort for December 12. Will WordPress be joining in that? It’s as simple as adding this to headers:
`<script src=”https://widget.battleforthenet.com/widget.js” async></script>
As described at https://www.battleforthenet.com/breaktheinternet/

Hi there @eqpa, I don’t know whether WordPressdotcom is participating officially or not in this effort, but we users (other than those on the Business plan) cannot add javascript on our sites. https://en.support.wordpress.com/code/
We do have the Internet Defense League widget that site owners can add to a widget area on their site and there are a few choices one can enable there, but again, I don’t know if a modal pop-up will be enabled for the 12th. More about the widget here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/internet-defense-league-widget/
Regardless, what I’ve done is create a “Break the Internet” post using both the large 600×600 pixel banner and the Vimeo embed on the battleforthenet page you’ve linked to This post is scheduled to publish on December 12th and will then publicize to my social media accounts.
Hope that gives you some idea on what you can do on your own site.

Thanks. You might want to post that entry sooner, since right now it has info to help people sign up and participate in the December 12 action.

Who do I contact to follow up on this?

I will type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for a Staff follow-up. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question

Hi @eqpa, I’ll check in to see if we’re doing anything on the 12th beyond our current campaign. I do know though that we’ve had a net neutrality widget available to our users for some time now. I use it on my own site, and we automatically activate a net neutrality message during campaigns.
You can read about that here:
-
By the way, to address Jen’s remarks, the modal popup has been on for a while now for users who have the Internet Defense League widget enabled. So that campaign is active already.
I’ll let you know if I find out anything about the “break the net” event for tomorrow.

Super! Thanks @supernovia and thanks @tt for tagging this thread.
@supernovia, FWIW – I added the IDL widget yesterday with the “don’t display a badge, only the campaign” option but am not getting the modal popup.
-
Someone really needs to update the Internet Defense League website. It’s still talking about July 12. Who runs that?
I just added the widget to my tiny site and looked at it from another computer. Nothing about the current campaign.
-
@eqpa – It looks like Fight for the Future is in charge of the IDL site but the activity for this campaign is happening at https://www.battleforthenet.com/breaktheinternet/ which has been hugely updated.
In order for the modal to appear, you’d need to choose the “campaign” option in that widget.
-
There is no “campaign” option as such, just a menu with three badge options and one, “Don’t display a badge (just the campaign)”
Switched to that last one and still nothing happens when I reload on the other computer.
Is WordPress really going to sit this out? I’ll go bug FFTF about this as well.
-
Hmmm, thanks folks. I’ve had it active on my site for a while now and I know it’s worked within the past week, as local friends have mentioned it.
Not sure what happened that it isn’t popping up right now. I’m reaching out to get this fixed.

Hey there @khrome – I see the Red Cat badge on your site. I think if you want the modal popup to display like on my screenshot and sites, you’ll need to switch to the last option in the widget “Don’t display a badge (just the campaign)” Make sure to publish your changes in the Customizer.
-
Hi @justjennifer,
Yup – I tried that earlier but I set it again just now so you can check it out. Here is a screenshot of where I’m setting it – am I on the right screen? Thanks!!

Ah! I just spent half an hour or more troubleshooting before it dawned on me: can you try going to My Site > Settings and enabling the protest option there?
Also, this specific December 12 campaign may technically be over (and we only show this during campaigns). But if you’ll try that setting I can test it. Thanks!
