network error when exporting media

  • Unknown's avatar

I am trying to export media but get a network error every time at around 400 MB (840mb total). I have tried from work internet, from home internet, on different browsers and always get the same result. Can you please help as I need to urgently rebuild this site for an upcoming event launch. It will still be a wordpress site but I have my own hosting sorted separately. Thanks.

  • Hi there,

Which site is this for? I see you have a few on your account. Happy to take a closer look at your export thanks!

    thanks!

  • Hi there,

Thanks for confirming. 400MB is a rather large export file, so in most cases that will need to be broken up to smaller chunks.

If I can ask, are you planning on moving off of WordPress.com and migrating to another provider? Exporting your site in this way does move the pages, blog posts, comments, and media, but does not include your plugins, theme, or any customizations.

  • Please be aware that this is the support forum for our free sites, which do not have the same features as sites under our Business plan.

However, the upgrade on livexchangeconference.com.au includes priority live chat support so with this in mind you can reach out to us here anytime (24/7) and we can take a closer look at your issue in realtime there: https://wordpress.com/help/contact

You will find you get faster help that way than by posting here and waiting for a reply. Hope this helps!

Thanks but that link takes me to the same public forum area – unless I am missing something.

FYI I am rebuilding the site in WordPress off of WordPress.com. I just want to export the content and can fix up the theme and plugins myself. Thanks

  • If you’re migrating to a different WordPress site, you don’t need to download your media library. The media library download is only useful if you want to download a copy of your media files to your computer’s hard drive, and is essentially just a dump of all the files in the media library, not. That download is not in a format that can be imported to another website.

Just use the regular export option to export the content for your site.

When you then import that .xml file(s) to your new site using the WordPress importer (WP-Admin ->Tools ->Import ->WordPress), the importer on your new site will automatically fetch the media files from the library on the site on our end, and upload them to your new site.

If you do want to download the media library anyway, we recommend using a download manager if you have a lot of files. That should prevent timeouts like what you’ve been experiencing.

okay, thanks I’ll give that a try.

nope, that doesn’t work. have increased upload sizes, times, blah, blah, blah.

    504 Gateway Time-out
The server didn’t respond in time.

Oh for the ability to be able to just install a plugin like Updraft or similar and migrate. looks like the only way i can do that is upgrade hosting and prepay for 12 months at $33 per month?

  • Do you mean you get a time-out when importing the .xml file to your new site? In that case you are most likely hitting memory limits on your server.

Please ask the WordPress.org community for advice on what you can do to prevent that – they have experience in troubleshooting import issues on self-hosted WordPress sites and should be able to point you in the right direction:

yep awesome support files from 2009 when i search migrating/import. Love wordpress for site builds but this hosting is an absolute joke.

  • From what I understand, the issue is now on the new site where you’re getting an error when trying to upload the XML file; is that correct?

If so, we do not have any control over that. As @kokkieh mentioned, you will want to post to the WordPress community forums or reach out directly to your new host to inquire about memory limits.
