Never Used Site?

  • Unknown's avatar

The name I would like to have for a blog currently takes one to a 3 year old blog on wordpress.com that was never actually used. Someone obviously took it and walked away.

What are the rules at wordpress.com about abandoned sites — not just dated active blogs, but ones never ever used. Is getting a blog site on wordpress.com and not making use of it a violation of rules? (Matt, cough).

    Thanks!!

    G’evening,
I’m sorry but your only opportunity to get an abandoned blog transferred to your username account is make contact with the person who registered it and have them agree to the transfer. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#transferring-your-blog-to-another-user-or-account
You can confirm that by using the searchbox as this question has been asked and answered many times before. I suggest registering a close variant of the name you want.

Leave a message on the blog and hopefully the owner will contact you. If not, there isn’t anything that can be done.

Seems there is an opportunity here for WordPress.com to make a few bucks, might not be enough volume. But WP.com could forward a request / email to the last known email address with a note from the person wanting the old URL. WP.com could charge a bit for forwarding the request. Any request would need to be looked at by a person for content. Restrict the forward to say only unused URL’s that are over a specific age, one to two years? Then a second charge for WP.com to transfer the unused URL to a new account.

I agree with not ever recycling blogs that have been used or suspended etc. as there could be content issues that might bite someone.

At one time they were doing that for free, but not anymore. It’s a privacy issue.
