New additonal sign-in to comment

  • Unknown's avatar

    In the last week I have been asked to sign-in order to make a friendly comment on 5 or 6 blogs, that I’ve followed for 10 year or so.

    This is tedious beyond belief and will only hasten the demise of blogging!

    Well done WP, another nail in the coffin!

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hello there,

    Many thanks for reaching out!

    Ok, can you tell us what blog this is happening with please?

    Also, can you tell me what browser is in use along with any browser extensions please?

    Many thanks in advance!

    @aleone89

    It has happened with all WP blogs this week. They ask for a WP sign in before allowing a comment or Like.

    I am using the latest Firefox and only use Adblock Plus.

    The issue has happened on these sites:

    Home

    https://rutheh.com/
    https://memoriediangelina.com/
    https://italianhomecooking.co.uk/

    I also had a freind saying they had a similar issue when trying to post a comment on my blog.

    Thanks for your help.

  • Hello there,

    Many thanks for that additional information.

    Does this happen after Adblock has been disabled and the cache and cookies have been cleared?

    @aleone89

    I have no idea and I am not going to clear the cache and cookies. I’m sure Adblock Plus and the cache and cookies are not the issue.

    This is (as far as I can tell) a WP issue – I am taken to a WP sign in page.

    None of the sites you listed are hosted by wordpress.com (automattic). So they’re all self-hosters.

    It just happeed again and it’s definitely wordpress.com asking me to sign in!

    If you’re trying to Like a post, that means the website is using the Jetpack plugin to enable WordPress.com Likes. Since Likes is a feature unique to WordPress.com, you will need to be logged in to your WordPress.com account to be able to Like one of their posts.

    Regarding the comments, it depends on what the site owner has set their comment form to do and whether or not they’re using the Jetpack Comments feature. This feature allows readers to use a WordPress.com, Facebook, or Twitter account to leave a comment.

    For example, on the thekitchensgarden.com site, their comment form offers you use a WordPress.com user account to comment, but it is not required unless you click the W logo:

    Your own site’s comment form is set up the same way. If you’re not logged into your WordPress.com account, you see the available options to comment. On your particular form, you require someone to enter an email and name in order to leave a comment:

    If you’re still having this problem, please take a screenshot of the problem when you try to leave a comment. If you’re not familiar with how to take a screenshot, this support document will help explain how to make one:

    Take a Screenshot

    Then, use a service like Snipboard.io to upload the screenshot and then share the image link from that service here and we’ll take a closer look.

    Thanks!

    @heroponriki

    I was making a comment (specifically) on thekitchensgarden.com (which I have been subscribed to for about 10 years) and not a like. I did not click on the W logo and I am always logged in to my wordpress.com account!

    This is something new introduced by WP recently and it is a PITA.

    …and JetPack is owned by WP!
